  • That vibrato is just that. It was never meant to be used for Kerry King tremelo divebombs. Jesus.

  • I had a 1968 Gibson SG Standard with that tremolo system. I went great gonzo on it one day and managed to break it off. Was really hard to find a replacement for it. After it was stolen and I almost immediately got it back, all I did was worry about it. So, like an idiot, I sold it. Yep, should have hung on to it. Now I'm considering other SGs just to fill in that void in my life. But I don't think I want to part with a couple thousand dollars either.

  • I just bought the ‘61 Gibson in TV Yellow from Sweetwater. The ones remaining are on sale for $1799! This one was a no brainer!

  • I would have bought it immediately if it didn't have the lyre vibrola. Makes the guitar useless for live sets.

  • Gibson makes a '61 Standard with the Maestro Vibrola as well (lists at $2499). How would you compare this Epiphone against that Gibson? I personally like the extra weight in the lower bout because it reduces the SG neck dive.

  • Great review as always, keep up the good work. I do have one question, though. For all the grief about the vibrola, it won't stay in tune, it's too stiff and hard to use, etc.; on your review of the '63 Custom you praised the vibrola for not being too loose and floppy but nice and sturdy which you felt really helped keep the guitar in tune….???????? Are we able presume that perhaps the tuning issues were just with this guitar, perhaps a badly cut nut, or is it that you've just changed your mind about the vibrola in general? Curious about your thoughts on that. I'm not trying to call you out on this I'm genuinely interested in these as choices for my next purchase. With the Epi '64 now being reduced to $1099 I can buy this one AND the '63 Custom for the price of the Gibson 61 Standard with vibrola. Any thoughts on all of this? Thanks again for the great channel.

  • The Vibrola needs the nut cut properly as well as the saddles rounded slightly….. I've seen people give them a flogging and they return back in tune…. once they're set up correctly….

  • Just picked up a epiphone deluxe pro for 300 dollars. I don’t get why it’s so inexpensive! Plays great no issues whatsoever! ( bought used as they are discontinued)

  • Hi John, first I would like to say that you are one hell of a good guitar player. Then I can tell you what causes this guitar to go out of tune so much, it is that tune o matic bridge with those meat cleaver style saddles. Those type of saddles are not meant to be used with that kind of a tremelo system where the strings have to move back and forth and if you would get a good quality roller style tune o matic like the Schallar, it would most likely solve the problem with that Vibrola causing the guitar to go out of tune like it does. The Schaller is one of the best because the saddles are compensated for the angel of the bridge so that they are straight with the strings.

  • Ok, an opposing opinion coming from someone who now owns one of these. The guy is totally misusing that Maestro in the worst way possible, and totally missed its good points. The Maestro is a VERY basic trem. It's really nothing more than a piece of metal that has good bounce back qualities after its been heated treated and bent to form, with six slots and screwed to a dense piece of wood. About as simple as you can get. Its beauty lies in the beautiful slow lifts and falls it produces, and the occasional quick return on a single dive bomb. Maybe, he will personal have a change of hear about them then.
