Is This The BEST 7 String Guitar for Beginners? – Ibanez RG7421

The Ibanez RG7421 was the first 7 string guitar I ever purchased. I bought it for around $250 used, and it got me thinking; is this the best, affordable 7 string guitar for beginners? In this video I tackle that question, give a full rundown of the guitar specs and test out the various tones. I hope you like the video!

  • I just bought a second hand RG74321 in the same color about 3 months ago and this thing is so sick. I replaced the nut with a Graphtech bone nut, replaced the volume knob with a push pull and placed it where the tone pot was then added a killswitch where the volume was because the knob kinda got in the way for how I play. Now i'm just waiting on an Lundgren M7 bridge pickup. I think i'll be pretty much done with it after that. I would like a longer neck in macassar wood at some point or maybe something similar that's not as expensive. Oh and swap out the tuners for Gotoh or hipshot but gaw lee 7 string tuners or so exspensive

  • I'm looking for my first 7 string guitar, and I'm intrigued about this guitar from this video. Is the fret work smooth and is the neck smooth? Would the pickups be good for modern metal?

  • I was thinking of purchasing the 6 string version of this. How does the 7 string feel to that of the 6. Lead playing as easy? I had a schecter demon 7 and it was bulky and hard to play in higher frets.

  • I agree on your choice. I picked up a 7321 on marketplace for $260 that has the Gibraltar bridge (it’s a 2010) and it’s fantastic. I may have been fortunate with the find because the neck feels better than my iron label. Electronics are basically shot but it was for a mod project anyways.

Also just sand down and stain the back of the neck! I’ve done it before for aesthetic reasons and also to get a close to nothing finish on it. Much cheaper than getting a replacement!

  • I got the Gio version of this guitar, it’s REALLY good for the price and it plays and feels great. I had an RG 6 string as well but, in my own experience, I didn’t like the neck, it felt quite uncomfortable to play since I have big hands, or maybe it was because I was too used to the 7 string at the time (I started learning guitar on it), so I ended up selling it and buying an AZES40 instead and that guitar is absolutely fantastic, the best guitar in the market at that price point imo, the neck is just perfect to me, it’s a bit thicker than the Wizard neck that was on the RG 6 string, but it’s still a thin neck. However, the Ibanez 7 string neck… man it feels like home! Love Ibanez and how they make some great quality guitars on the more affordable end. Great video and playing btw!
