I’ve owned 500+ pedals. Here are the only 6 you actually need.

  • Personally I love the Earthquaker Delay/reverb pedals and Vemuram Shanks for overdrive (but expensive!). Also the Line 6 HX FX is a great multi because it has all of the vintage M9 tones plus the new ones! Great video!!

  • There is only 1 option to be complite with 6 peds – take TUNA, NG, OD, DST, FUZZ and MF-processor ROFL

  • Sorry, misinformation. Nobody is qualified in the world of thousands of pedals to state, "These are the only 6 you need."

  • Wow, you sure opened up a can of worms! I could rattle off my 6ft board but why bother, I will never a Frank Marino. The only comment I have is "compressor "?

  • Got 9 pedals on my board. 1 compressor, 3 stages of gain (low, medium, high), 1 booster, 1 amp in a box, 1 delay, 1 reverb and 1 EQ.

  • Having had some of these, the Lightspeed isn’t the best pick for these low gain, sorta tones. It’s easily the SoloDallas Storm. It’s doing a lot more for you with a lot more versatility (optical compressor in there too). Yeah the Lightspeed prob has more gain on tap but no one is using it like that. It’s always that low gain thing. The Storm is sick tho…like it’s not just another sweet low gain OD. And it works great for mid-gain sorta stuff with the expander/compander circuit going on. Storm is what you want.

  • My personal philosophy is, if you need any pedals, chances are good, that you simply are playing the wrong amp(s). Especially concerning overdrive and distortion pedals. An eq pedal can be useful for a lot of reasons, so is a buffer, if you use a pedalboard.

But if you need a low to mid gain (overdrive) pedal, to get a good sound, I rather invested in a better sounding amp, which covers this range better and comes closer to your own sound ideas, instead of buying any pedals, which do this job (almost always worse, alone because almost all of them cut frequencies and therefore alter the amp sound, which can be intended but often also makes things sounding worse – no bass, shrill transistor/op-amp treble…).

On the other hand, if you have a good amp, you can even today do a lot alone with guitar volume, to clean up your sound, if you use a two- or multi-channel-amp, you anyway get separately adjustable clean and overdrive sounds without any pedals.

Effects can be the salt in the soup sometimes, but the basic sound for me should come from hands, guitar and amp alone. Very old school, I know, but still sounding better to me usually than any more contemporary pedal-orgy alternative. (Not to speak about all addditional costs, like stabilized power supply, patch cables, pedalboard itself, matching gigbag,… If you sum all of them up, you could easily have bought yourself a better amp instead.)

Most of my guitar heroes used one or two amps (Plexi or AC30) live on stage, played one or two guitars (Strat or Les Paul) and maybe use one or two pedals (Wah, Univibe, Echoplex,…) and they all sounded great and unique. Mostly, because they had their own playing style, which was very much independent of their gear.)

But of course a lot of players will see things differently today, I think. (I'm an old guy and no professional musician, so I am free, to do things, just as I like them.)

I personally can well live without any effects, maybe apart from my beloved JEN wah sometimes…

  • I never quite figured out a place for reverb in the live setup. Too many terrible sounding rooms, I guess

  • I am appreciative of the Multi effect route regarding modulation. I have a couple phasers and chorus standalone pedals that I love, BUT I still have a Boss MD-500 to cover alllll the weird stuff, if I need it.

kinda same for delay reverb. I am LOVING the JHS 3 Series Reverb and Oil Can Delay as stand alones, but my ultimate is the Source Audio Collider. Covers far more ground than most need and sounds AMAZING! And you can tweak it to be 2 delays or 2 reverbs if needed.

  • The wildcard multi-fx like HXOne is a great call. I'd take a compact dual-drive pedal, like Keeley Blues Disorder, for the low-mid and higher-gain drive tones (Bluesbreaker and OCD). And squeeze in a compact fuzz, maybe something like Mythos Golden Fleece or Haephestus. There's some good dual delay+reverb pedals too I like. Source Audio Collider, El Capistan, Del-verb, Line6 DL4mk.II (also a looper). Strymon Flint is another I really like to get a good spring reverb and tremelo, where the amp doesn't have those. Delay pedals that can be great modulation pedals are nice too (TC Electronic 2290P).

  • Nice video, but I'm not that overly impressed by the pedal lineup, the Memory Man is excellent, but expensive, right? I use the HALO Delay which is amazing as well, but not budget friendly either. Strymon makes some incredible pedals as well. Also, back in the day, the Boss EQ's were noisy as he*ll so not sure if they have improved, regarding the 7 band one, but budget friendly yes. For low to mid gain overdrive, I do like the Boss BD-2W Blues Driver Waza, which I have found is "incredibly" transparent to your tone, unlike the TubeScreamers. Test this for yourself in your local music store, and it's just as "budget friendly". Anything that jacks with my tone a bunch is thumbs down, and TS pedals tend to compress the sound too much for my taste in my style. I think you probably only need a few pedals at most, and say the TONEX, and you are totally GOLDEN. Run that thru some Celestion Greenbacks or whatever, and rock on! ???? ????????????

  • I've been playing over 40 years, rock and blues, and have a bookcase full of FX pedals. I used to use a large pedal board but have trimmed it down to an 18" Pedaltrain board with only four pedals. I use a Keely compressor for when I use a Strat to add sustain, a Strymon Riverside for overdrive, a Wampler Terraform for all my modulation needs, and will alternate between a Strymon El Capistan and the Source Audio Collider for delay and when I want reverb. Carrying this thing is so easy and I couldn't be happier with my tone.

  • My basic setup is this. King of Tone clone, klone, Mooer Solo, Boss GE-7, Tremolo, TrueTone H2O V3, Hermida Spring Reverb. With this setup, I can get anything from boosted cleans to searing metal leads and anything in between.

  • Jesus help me, I’m running 3 ODs, EQ, compressor, phaser, chorus, pog2, combined delay/ verb, extra delay, verbotrem, and boost.

    I need a consult

  • Hey Mason great videos always ! I would have added a compressor, all other are great selection too. If I were to keep it only on 6 pedals I'd swap the light OD for the compressor, and use an amp channel with low gain. Anyways just my opinion, combinations can be endless. Thank you!

  • With a decent modern amp/ pedal modeler you can achieve the same chain and sound and no need to worry about tone issues or low quality sound, no need for infinite power outlets, pedal board stand, buffer and blablabla

  • This appears to be 6 pedals YOU would choose. I have a completely different lineup that works much better for ME. None of your recommendations would work in any of my scenarios. Just sayin'.

    Reply
  • In past videos you said that you like to have heavier distortions early in the drive chain with lighter drive coming afterwards. Why the change now? I assume one way is better for stacking.
