Did you know? In 1985, Metallica acquired several Mesa Boogie Mark IIC+ amps to help define their evolving sound. Among them was a Mark IIC+ DG that would later earn the nickname “Crunchberries.” Kirk’s amp, however, featured the legendary “++ mod” – a rare circuit tweak that adds a different feel and extra saturation.
James Hetfield initially used Crunchberries, but quickly switched to the IIC++, which became the go-to studio amp for Metallica over the next 12–15 years.
