My name is Jens Larsen, a Danish Jazz Guitarist and Educator. The videos on this channel will help you explore and enjoy Jazz. Some of them teach you how to play jazz guitar, but other videos focus on Music Theory, like Jazz Chords, or offer advice on practicing and learning Jazz on guitar or any other instrument.

The videos are mostly jazz guitar lessons, music theory, song analysis, and videos on jazz guitars.

  • I’m a steel pan player on a life long quest to learn jazz improv. This is a great video!

  • I speak as a musician who has studied academically, with private teachers, as a self-taught person: I grew up with YouTube and the times I've tried to learn something more meaningful to me (or at least something that requires a certain understanding and isn't something more "repetitive and mechanical"… like "how to play this song," "how to do this technique") I'm referring to something like this, developing a language/vocabulary in a musical style (in this case jazz), I found very little material that was truly digestible and well organized enough to be able to follow and truly incorporate it.

I mean, practice time is irreplaceable; everyone has to sit down and do their homework, but what you do here is truly educational. I feel that anyone who comes here with a genuine interest in learning something and taking away a tool will find it.

Sorry for the long comment, Jens! but I was inspired! You do a wonderful work and I feel like saying this it's the least I can do in gratitude ????????

  • for me it was always more helpful to think of things in terms of where they fall in the tonal range. Since I/iii/vi (in this vid you only talk about I and iii but A minor 7 (vi) can also be used) are all the tonic area you can substitute those chords for each other. Is that just a different way of thinking about the same thing?

  • Jens, thank you so much for this video, very useful ! I suppose all these exercices should be transposed on every other positions of the neck ? (So with different fingering).

  • Wow Thank you. This is all very understandable, super informative and useful. Very generous amount shared in a logical way. !!

  • This is such a great lesson Mr. Larsen!! Thank you so much and I will try this right away!! Now, I hate to be impolite but, at around what age or stage of your playing life were you when you realized you were doing it wrong? How did you go about "unlearning" everything you’ve learned before?

  • The new confusion never ends, and neither does the new techniques with answers that change and increase your growth. If only I could practice more, still I'm growing!

  • On the Diatonic Pivot Arpeggio Exercise, can we use beat 4 to connect to the next chord? E.g. on C maj 7, play C and E eighth notes on beat 4 for a diatonic enclosure approach to D minor 7? What notes would you choose?

  • Great lesson Jens
The best part, the one note you played min 4:50, beginning the solo (the 1st Bar), with one note !
That caught my attention and sounded so right ! Thx again.

  • Love your videos Jens! Do you have any tips on using enclosure patterns over all chord tones in an arpeggio to make longer lines?

  • Hey Jens! How important do you consider it to practice descending arpeggios, and descending pivot arpeggios?

  • Premium lesson right here! I like the chromatic step and the pivot. Never heard of this excersice. It makes so much sense though. Thank you

  • Sir, you've been teaching this finger exercise for over 10 years. For the record, can you please reveal exactly how this has helped your jazz soloing?

  • Wow! I never understood that pivot arpeggio concept until this video. Your jazz instruction is the best there is on YouTube. Always look forward to the next video. Thanks for your teaching.

  • have you noticed an increase in interest in Barry’s ideas or methodology recently? i feel since he passed away these videos have blown up more. those old hague masterclass videos were comforting for me to watch years ago. something about Barry’s way of speaking and looking at music felt real. there was this undeniable truth to it. somehow it felt like you were a part of the essence of that.
