Metal subgenres like death metal, black metal, and thrash metal are known for having fast tremolo picking rhythm guitars.
In this video, I give you the basics of tremolo picking so you can play faster metal riffs.
The caveat here is that I share my personal approach to tremolo picking. This may differ from others, but I hope it helps you establish a foundation in finding what works best for you.
Oh, and at the end of the lesson, I give you three metal tremolo picking exercises to play along with and practice.
Here’s the timeline:
00:00 – 00:42 – Intro
00:43 – 01:04 – What is Tremolo Picking?
01:05 – 01:55 – Pick I Use

Hey boss…. had a question (probably stupid so I apologize) finger positioning…. I try to land in the middle of the fret… should I be closer to actual fret or is that for specific sounds?
Thank you for covering every aspect of tremolo picking from the pick thickness, how to hold the pick, wrist/hand placement, etc…
I also loved how you leave much freedom in how to do these things with finding what works best for each person. ????
Best tutorial on YouTube for tremolo picking; Thank You so much! Liked & Subscribed!
(This will become part of my daily routine starting tonight, I need to get better w this.) ????
Your voice is incredible. Please start a podcast ????
What do you suggest is a good tempo to start your tremelo picking journey?
Unfortunately you didn’t show anything helpful you just talked about you .There is an actual mechanical way to improve this technique and a multitude of ways to use it musicaly yet you showed nothing. If I was you I’d seriously rethink your videos before posting.
i play the intro of killchain like a sloppy sandwitch.. i'm going to practice this for a week
I played with 1.5mm picks for years. This video made me take my old 0.73mm out of the box again. It works much better for tremolo picking! Many thanks Jason! This is how you learn something at 50 hahaha ,,/
Wow, I was looking for typical tutorial and found this treasure, thanks so much for sharing!
Awesome video! One thing that you didn't comment though, and I am curious about. Do you just scratch the string with the tip of the pick, or do you use a larger portion of the pick to go through the string? The big E is quite "heavy" to go through, but I feel that just scratching it sounds terrible…
Acually realy helped
i tought its bad to use Ring finger as rest like on banjo but it increaseing my accuraccy so i am now able to play 177 almost without training but i was like ,,well its not the way you are suppose to fly above instrument…" so you play confy really helped me cuz this ring method is confy for me and helps me to play parts i struggle to without.
i train even without but until i get it in hand i will use ring ????
thanks bautista
Thank you man for this❤
Wow holding the pick like you feels as natural as holding it in my teeth. I don't know how you and Hetfield do it.
Some worship songs I play involve tremolo picking so thanks
How many strokes do you do per beat? Another video said 8, just want to be sure. It's funny, i went back to his video, and then looked at your exercise, and my brain tells me its 4 lol
came because i suck at guitar, stayed because of that sick bass sound. now to break my hands…
squid game type shit
how come the T is not upside down?
Do you hold your pick like that for everything?
I always get stucked with the pick on the string after a while. what am i doing wrong?
Just started playing the E Guitar 2 Months ago. I learn in my own pace and it is a lot fun. to have channels like this is a big help and it enlarges the fun of the discovery. thanks for doing this 🙂
Awesome video fren ty (: if y’all are playing super technical riffs let the aggression come from ya performance energy 😀 using excess tension to try to force speed can cause health issues ????
Thicker picks do work better for metal. You have more control and precision. I use Dunlop 1mm's have for 2 decades. They're great for metal and last a while.
Thanks man this has helped me a lot :)) Also I really like your approach to the topic – really chill and easy to understand.
Ps. I love your voice it just adds even more "relaxed" feeling to this video :))
Hey! You hold the pick the same way a James Hetfield, nice!
I tried these exercises on my cheap imitation Stratocaster with a cheap amp and it sounded so boring compared to this video, even though the notes and technique were identical.
What do I need to do to get this awesome Metal Sound in this vid? A better amplifier, guitar, or adjust the guitar like installing new pickups?
I never understood the appeal of Metal u til I saw these riffs. I love it now!
Appreciate this video and the practice sections. I've needed to work my picking speed up recently and this clicked for me for some reason or another.
You have earned a like and subscribe, haha.
