Vox AC30 vs AC15 | Which Amp Is Best for You?
Today’s video has been 6 years in the making. Vox ac30CC2 Vs Vox AC15CC1. People have been asking me to make this shootout for as long as I’ve had this channel going. So, this is finally it! I went out, about a month ago, and rented a modern vox ac30CC2 loaded with Celestion Greenbacks.
In this episode, I’ll be shooting out the AC30 Vs the AC15 in the following tests:
– AC30 VS AC15 with a Crowther Hot Cake
– AC30 VS AC15 clean tone
– AC30 VS AC15 edge of breakup tone
– AC30 VS AC15 amp gain tone
– AC30 VS AC15 reverb shootout
– AC30 VS AC15 tremolo shootout
How I approached this shootout:
1. My objective was not to make the amps sound the same. I chose specific amp settings for each section of this demo, and set both amps to the same setting values. If the AC30 has the Top Boost volume at 9 o’clock and Master at 12, then I used the same settings for the AC15, etc.
2. Both these amps came equipped with different speakers, in order to make this a logical tone comparison, both amps are going through my Vox 2×12 cab loaded with a Greenback and a 70th anniversary. A simple SM57 was used, off-axis at about 2″ from the grill cloth, pointing at the edge of the cone.
3. In post, I made sure that all the audio peaked at the same level, in order not to hear a volume difference.
4. No post EQ or compression is ever added to my audio. The only thing that is done is a mastering level to match YouTube’s -14dBLUFS levels.

I just got an AC15 used in Canada for $500 with a blue alnico in it. I feel like I got such a steal omfg. it sounds amazing.
I did this based on your videos. was looking at blues jr, came across your videos and decided man, this is a crazy deal i had to buy it
They both sound great.And I think VOX amps look great as furniture too ! My AC15C2 Twin sounds nice and full.I think your SG sounded fantastic.

I got a Vox AC 10 from 1964… bought itfrom the UK for 990 euro in 2010….. nothing beats that sound,,,,,,but go buy other shit f you can't okay ( sorry )
I have a home studio and a Jazz Chorus 40 for cleans, the problem, so it would be pretty easy for me to think I need an ac15 but the Overdrive tone off the ac15 just doesn't even compare to the ac30. Which sucks cus the ax30 would be complete overkill for me and would dwarf my jc 40, do you think getting a dual greenback would fix that problem w the ac15?
Btw I’ve heard of some people being happy with swapping out the reverb tank in the ac15. A relatively cheap thing to do but have you tried and what ones did you try & what was your opinion of the results? Thanks
Well I own a ac15 so I’m going to play it. You can send me your 30 if you want though. Otherwise I might buy a super beetle for my next vox. Either that a supro amulet or the magnatone panoramic stereo 2×10 will probably be my next amp.
Unless I decide to buy a toneking falcon grande with an imperial tritube preamp pedal. If bought new it costs the same as the imperial amp but you get more tone options plus, they can be found used, open box whatever and the imperial preamp can be combined with other options as well.
If I’m being honest I’ll probably buy them all anyway at some point.

Tariffs changed things btw
I think the twin speakers help a lot with the spikiness you talked about the 15 has the 30 doesn't. Same with the brittle sound. My solution was to run a solid state Marshall with mine. Cheap and light and also takes pedals great.
