  • I always try dialing my clean tones to immulate a natural sound, as if the electric was an acoustic, the more natural you can make it sound, the better it handles effects

  • I own one of these, and you are right on the money Jack. I keep the eq down, use low input, its a thumpin amp, sounds cool when it is dimed too , like outside, lol love the 6L6s when cookin.

  • I have a Blues Deluxe for cleans and a Marshall super lead or a 69’ tremolo 50 with a Marshall 1960B 4×12 cab for dirty tones. A Tom Shultz attenuator on the Marshall and a JHS little black box on the deluxe. (EFX loop)
But I rarely fire them up because I also have a Rivera Super Champ which is my favorite amp.
You just plug in any guitar and it sounds great!

  • I work with the Carl Martin Hot drive'n boost and the Carl Martin TremoVibe, on a Deluxe 1997 with a Gibson ES335. Always channel2 , bright switch on , low bass indeed, presence and middle on 1o clock. And , voila, my own bluesy signature sound. ????

  • my BDRI (2nd one) I picked up used on Reverb. Just the amp with no cabinet. The ribbon cables have been replaced with PTP wiring. Mercury Magnetic Transformers and a Frommel Supreme kit. Speaker used is a WGS Veteran 30. I had purchased a combo 1-12 Bluesbreaker clone cabinet from a cabinet maker yrs b4. I installed the amp into it. looks great sounds great.

  • I'll use the bright switch from time to time just messing about and it doesn't sound bad, BUT my knobs live in the area of treble:2-5
    Bass:0
    Mids-8-12

  • I'm glad someone talked about this! This amp has a lot of potential but it's a fixer upper.

I play a strat and have landed in a place with mine that I love. If you own this amp, DO THIS.

    1. I changed the first tube to a A7Y instead of the A7X. This changed the gain profile and allowed me to turn it up louder without the harsh breakup. Get the JJ tube, cause it helps mellow the harshness.

    2. Replace the speaker. I put in an Emenance Swamp Thang for about $190. It made the whole amp cleaner and louder, smoothed out a lot of the harshness, and really unlocked the flexibility in the EQ. It also made the drive channel much more useable. I didn't expect it to make such a huge difference but it completely changed the amp.

    3. After I had done those things, I keep the volume at about 8 and use the volume knob on the guitar to go between rhythm and lead. I have drive pedals sent to unity volume and I stack them for tone shaping.

    4. I struggled finding a way to get the ice picky sound out while still maintaining detail in the guitar. I use the bright switch! Then turn down the treble and presence. Also, I dip the mids substantially, which weirdly really helps with the ice picky tone.

    5. The speaker change substantially affected the bass response. Before, I had the bass cut almost all the way out and it was still too much. With the new speaker, I find that I adjust the bass EQ based on the room size. Bigger rooms get more bass and my guitar has a thicker lead tone. But in my practice room, I bring it way down.

This is a great amp with some mods! If you're fighting with this amp, see if some of these things work for you!

  • They are a good amp, too bad Fender used cheapass plastic jacks, but they are fairly easy to replace. Profit over reliability

  • Is there any difference between the Deluxe and the Deville.I have a 1990 Deville and just love the tone from this amp,I'm also using a 7 ban EQ

  • Old line 6 red bean pod through the effects loop mod on blackface adds delay and reverb set the volume on pod as needed. Add a footpedal screamer

  • I’ve been playing around with mine for a week and found it sounds best with the first input, presence at 3, bass at 3, treble 5, mids 8, reverb 9. And a jhs little black amp pedal in the loop to tame the volume at home.

  • I just recently bought one of these. I agree that you should leave the bright switch off. But I personally like the tone of the first input with the mids around eight but the presence around four. The pedal takes overdrives really well. I use the morning glory Transparent overdrive and I have the tone rolled back a little bit. That sounds really good like this and with tube screamers

  • I have the original and it has such an amazing sound – 10/10 pure and creamy in my opinion. I don't go near the gain channel though haha

  • I convert hot rod and blues series fenders to hand wired. They're a great candidate for a 59 bassman or plexi circuit. Some people do a dumble conversion.
Well played ones have heat problems and they can kind of self destruct.
So if you have one that you love, take it to a tech before the inevitable happens! If youre adventurous, convert it to a hand wired masterpiece!

  • Hi Jack, do you think this amp would be good for semihollow guitars with p90s that tend to be dark tone guitars?

  • Thank for the review of the Fender Blues Deluxe. I didn’t want to gig with a ‘68 Princeton that is in near perfect condition plus needed an amp that will reach so I bought the Blues Deluxe. There is a learning curve involved so thanks for your discussion regarding the parameters of this amp, is very valuable information. I have always played straight into the amp, no pedals! I’m in a band with other retirees and we are playing music that I will need a few pedals. Do you have or know of a video that covers basic uses of pedals? Our band is comprised of very accomplished musicians and it’s coming together to be something special. Hope your day is wonderful.

  • I turn up my volume till it just gets loud and turn it down a notch, I do the same with the eq, it's usually all pretty low like 3 and 4

  • The blues deluxe needs 12" vintage 30s but it's loaded with 10s, that's my big issue

  • I went to my amp specialist (and awesome amp builder) Chucktronic in Quebec City. Replaced capacitors, tamed the reverb tank and changed the stock speaker for Eminence Cannabis Rex. Long story short, I agree with Jack: a few tweeks and now it sounds wicked good! ????

  • No need to go into input 2. I use my BDR on input 1, but turn the guitar down. Rolling back both the volume and tone, the sound gets much sweeter. I also made an effect-loop attenuator, but would only use that at home. The spring reverb's perfectly good. The only time a digital reverb would have been better for me was during an outdoor gig on a very windy evening, when every gust shook the tank so much I had to turn the reverb off.

  • Fromel mod really fixes this amp to near perfection…. Also look at getting a lion tamer mod for master volume control…

I hope the baby is happy and healthy.

    I’m number 7 too.

  • funny…. I was playing my blues deluxe reissue just yesterday straight in the front panel with my tele (I generally use it as a pedal platform) and thought it sounded dark without the treble pretty much dimed

  • Thx to share this vid about the blues deluxe. I use recently input 2, with the master crancked to 10, drive on 2 and Ibanez mini delay in the loop and the spring reverb on 3. When I play this setup through my '97 Epi es295…well now I am really in love with this amp. Now It does what I hoped it would do before. Thanks a lot Jack and many greetings from Belgium/Europe????????

  • I REALLY enjoy your gear review videos, Jack.
Just top notch presentation and superb playing.

Not sure what going on with Maine but I was born in Ellsworth.

  • Great review. I use a Steel Singer and a Joyo Overdrive. Great amp and I do love the reverb. The Drive channel is terrible, definitely needs pedals. Strats and Pauls sound great.

  • Gut it, keep the transformers and speakera and build a 5 knob 40watt Deluxe. Vol, Treble , mid, bass and reverb. Add a 12at7 and get a smaller 3 spring reverb tray. 1 channel simple design. Lacquer the tweed and you will have a 40 watt amp that can out perform most . Rock n Roll.

  • First thing….swap out the 2 power resistors and 2 diodes and mount them off the board, or you WILL have a cooked board.

  • I own one of these from the 90’s. it’s a POS. sure you can replace all the components but why not just buy a real amp. I use as a backup if everything else breaks

  • anyone else hear the high pitched sound with the clicking?? Mine does that too. It's so annoying. I came to this video looking for advice at how to make mine sound better or better utilize it and I hear that same damn clicking sound. My Vox NT15 never did that

  • Regarding the "To much volume issue", I do as you suggest, use the volume 2 input. Then I insert a Morley Volume Plus pedal into the Send & Return input/output section. This way, Like you stated earlier, you can raise the preamp as much as you like and still control the overall volume. Works like a charm and volume issue solved.
