Saw Mike and the Knobs the other night … 12 years after this and he’s pretty much using the same setup. The autographs on the firebird are almost worn off now.
Oh I love that mandolin!
Too bad the interviewer doesn’t know anything. I’d have asked whether the mandolin was tuned as a guitar or mandolin. The Rik’s a 360 fireglow. And this guy works for a guitar magazine. Such wasted opportunity to have junior high students holding the mic.
It’s a 360 fireglow lol
Of course they are trying to get all the microphones to squeal and feedback during this recording. Sounds like they are figuring out what NOT to do during the show. Find the squealing thresholds ????????????
I may have missed it, but did the tech say if Mike used had both Princeton and the Deluxe running at all times? Or did he switch between them? I know this video is extremely old, and obviously Heartbreakers ended when Tom died. But does anyone know if this is still the rig Mike uses in Dirty Knobs?
6:56 I love how they just brush over a legit 1959 Les Paul
Great story in Mike's book about how he acquired the Broadcaster in 1975 from a long lost music store in Hollywood for $650! Great book, fantastic read. Highly recommended.
In the early 80's i was a bench tech for TV's and VCR's and stereos in Tampa Florida. RCA was sending all the Florida techs to Orlando for training on a new big screen coming out. There was like 20 guys there. At the end of the training we were all hanging around and one dude says out loud anybody know who Tom petty is? I laughed we were in Florida hell yeah!! He said Mike Campbell's my son. We all knew who Mike was and how talented he was. His dad was really proud of him. i guess his Dad may have owned a TV repair shop. That happens alot kids whose dad owns a shop and they get electronic knowledge and become musicians and work on guitars & amps. Anyway Mikes dad was really proud of Mike.
How many guitars does a guitarist need?
One…….more.
Cool. More like this please
Very cool rig rundown, love my Princeton and deluxe vintage amps
Great rundown
Video seems ancient. Thanks premier
Cool collection, really cool.
No broadcaster, disappointed????
All about tone so put your deluxe on 2 ????
Fender tubes baby
I always wanted to see TOM'S rig and I don't think it ever got shown.
Nice to see the Excelsior (Fender) amp in his rig. I ♡ my Excelsior.
taking 50’s – 60’s guitars on a tour is insane to me. If I started doing gigs I’d get reissues of some of my vintage gear, no way is playing anything from the 50’s live
I always thought TP was boring but solid .. I still think that but they were great solid characters
The guitar techs knowledge of the Rickenbackers is appalling & inexcusable (3:10) The first guitar is a 360/12 Fireglo (not Mapleglo). The 2nd Rick is also a 360/12 (not a 375), but with vintage "toaster top" pickups.
I need to know
How can that blond Tele at the beginning be a ‘54? It has a rosewood fretboard. (Unless it’s a ‘54 body with a later neck on it.)
He certainly doesn’t know his Rickenbacker model numbers or colors.
The 67 Rickenbacker isn’t a 370 it’s a 360/12OS for old style.
Chinner!!!
Campbell toe… hur hur good one (make it happen).
The condition of that tuned up Sherwood Forest green strat…. Scratched up, guts hanging out, still going strong… if guitars could talk.
Enough axes for an guitar museum collection right there
09:30 What is that guitar with the built-in speakers and drum patterns?!
Step One. I am powerless over guitars, my wife has become unmanageable.
Mike is a great guitar player and writes such great parts. Those fretboards are disgusting though lol.
Why does Mike have a RC-20 in his rig? Well I do as well, but I'm not touring the world.
BeautifuuuuuuuLL
ROCXXXXXX
10:12 line6 delay
14:10 "These go to TWELVE!!"
6:55 "Oh, gosh… i should have known it…a… oh no!" LOL Loved it
One of the most underrated bad asses of all time
Is that poop on the fretboard?
Love Camel Toe ????
Just insane
"Little Ricky"….The Rickenbacker Mandolin WITH a whammy Bar! That pretty much explains everything about how Mike Campbell Rolls! Steve Winstead has lived the life many of us dreamt about back in those days we played in our own garage bands. The Roadies are absolutely The Guts of a Band! Cheers From Ohio
Interesting… Mike's order of effects in the signal chain is in the complete opposite of what you would normally expect. Mike gets some of the best tones in the business, so it obviously doesn't make that big of a difference.
At the start of this interview there was smoke coming out of a USB port. Contact high!
The rickenbacker is fireglo
So cool, but the whole not cleaning the fretboards is f*cking disgusting ????
