Supergrass’ Road to Rouen at 20: Is This Their Best Album?

We revisit Supergrass’ Road to Rouen on its 20th anniversary, exploring how personal loss and a deliberate shift in tone produced a “headphones album” that rewards start-to-finish listening. The discussion breaks down standout tracks (“Tales of Endurance,” “St. Petersburg,” “Roxy,” “Finn”), why the record feels more somber and story-driven than earlier, swaggering hits, and what the new edition adds (remaster, live cuts/rarities, and “débranché” sessions). We weigh its legacy, compare it with the band’s arena-friendly catalog, and ask the big question: is Road to Rouen actually Supergrass’ best album? Let us know your take in the comments.

  • It's a corker. The band went for a different live set up around this time. They were sat down, had an extra percussionist on stage. The stage was decorated with lamps. The year before was the 10 years anniversary hits tour so Road To Rouen was a reaction against those 3 min pop hits.
