  • sick! Forgot I had one and will definitely try it out again. Been using the Greer Lightspeed as my only form of dirt. (Works absolute wonders) but will try the ol rat again!

  • The pedal didn't make the "oh no exploding guitar sound." That was the player. ❤ Brandon D'eon video titled "why your bends sound like s**t." Highly recommend. It helped me. Lol

  • To my ear at home. The rat goes from over drive to distortion with the distortion knob between 0-25% from 25-40% you have fat distortion and from 40-100% it’s all Fuzz.

  • For $30 you can get a joyo “splinter” (the rat from ninja turtles) which is an amazing Fat Rat clone.

  • I bought a rat 1 in about 1984, a a second one in about 1990 to gain stage for the loud grunge I was doing at that time. I used rat 1 mainly for a Santana like smooth lead tone. Rat 2 was a bit more fuzzy than rat 1, but you could smooth both out. So yes I agree rat is the only drive type pedal you need. But you need 2 of them.

  • Where did you find that they got their name from professional company?

It works but I don't believe you just because of how dumb of a name that is, there's no way they went "well we're professional and we're a company… I got it!"

  • 1:24 Right now the bluesbreaker has a lot of popular overdrives based on it, and this has been the case for over a decade. The KOT famously rivaled Klon for cult status, and the Morning Glory is right now one of they most hipster drives to own whilst simultaneously getting huge celebrity endorsements. By the way I do like RATs, among other things.

  • As a late life learner I'm not interested in the lates coolest boutique fashion statement pedals. I just want the fundamentals.
A Blues Driver, A Rat, (Never got on with the DS-1, I'm not a Marshall style rocker) A fuzz (The dependable Boss FZ-1w is as "boutique" as I get)
Amp reverb and tremolo finish the edges of my tone and I get close enough to song tones I enjoy without having to sweat the details.
My R.Attack Rat clone was a revelation and I particularly enjoy its LED clipping TurboRat mode as a low gain overdrive.

  • The way I like to describe the sound of the Rat, is sizzle. There’s this satisfying steak on a grill like sound swimming around there.

  • I have a RAT since college. It's been nearly 15 years and it stills rocks. There was sometime that I didn't picked it up for my pedalboard because it had some weird noise, so some weeks ago I took it and realized that the battery plug was in contact with part of the electronic board and some metal parts, so I isolated it with insulating tape and IT WORKED. THAT DIRTY RAT WAS ALIVE AGAIN, so I couldn't help putting it back in my pedal board. My distortions/ODs section goes like this: Boss Blues Driver > Boss DS-1 > EHX Hot Tubes > RAT, being my RAT in charge of the dirtyness.

  • Never became warm with any RAT. Tubeless, too compressed basic sound, too intense bass-cut, too thin, too intense treble boost for my taste.

I prefer the pure, already well adjusted tones of my amps and more gain, than I already have, I certainly do not need. Much less, if the price is a worse, more unbalanced, tubeless sound.

But I anyway never have been a fan of fuzz-distortion. Opposite to real all tube high-gain, but this is something completely different.
