  • I love your discussions when they bring something to my attention, that I never connected before. For example, Discovery's intro basically being Taurus 2 – so many other parts, hidden in plain sight!

Intereseting hearing a speculative breakdown of The Lake. I always listened to this, thinking that this piece was supposed to capture the passage of a day on Lake Geneva. It starts off calm (in the morning), small ripples building, gets gradually more busy, an energetic section, where I imagine a speed boat towing a water skier, then it winds down, toward evening and calm again.

  • Discovery is one of my favourites. I wish The Lake was another 10 mins!!!
I love the b-sides Afghan and In The Pool too! Amazing solos on them!
I wonder if Pictures In The Dark was written around the Discovery sessions. It’s closer to that era than Islands in 1987.

  • You need to look at the exposed live album. The renditions of tubular bells on that album is outstanding.
Especially the ambient guitars segment of part two, the solos on top that seem to glide in and out of time is just mind numbingly beautiful.

  • This was my first Mike O album I bought when it came out. Love it.

I can talk about the 1984 Suite mix. The bass sounds in the stereo mix are really low or missing altogether. On the 5.1 mixes they're there but mostly in the LFE channel. The stereo mixes were downmixes of the 5.1 mix and it's standard when downmixing music from 5.1 to not include the LFE channel. Because with music 5.1, you're not supposed to use the LFE at all.

So the stereo downmixes sound very thin and lacking bass. I went to the bother of extracting the 6 channels of the 5.1 mix and doing my own downmix with the LFE included and they sound much better! 🙂
