Here’s Why I Think The MXR Phase 90 is The Most Versatile Pedal – Five Effects in One!

In this video, I’ll show you why I think the MXR Phase 90 is the most versatile single pedal ever built. With just one knob and an $80 price tag, this pedal is like having 5 effects in one, which is handy for smaller pedalboards.

  • I have the script phaser on my board for its namesake and Univibe sounds. My micro flanger covers the rest. It can do flange, chorus, autowah, and Leslie better than the script phaser. It can even be its own version of a phaser if placed before overdrive. I come back to this video to be sure the script can’t do what the mf can. I end up keeping both on.

  • Hello from Chile. I have the same pedal, you put it before the tube screamer or other dist. on the univibe example?….thanks a lot, great test, great player

  • "What's the most versatile pedal?" Definitely the phaser. I haven't owned a Phase 90, but phase has been my go-to modulation sound from the beginning (over 20 yr ago). There are so many other great sounds, but the phaser works great in so many applications, and it's surprisingly novel in many cases because everyone's always going for chorus and wah (which are great too).

  • I finally placed my Small Stone Phaser BEFORE my overdrive and distortion. I get a much better Univibe/Wah sound from it, plus it alleviates the volume boost the new Small Stone has ⛱️ Its fun pairing it with a chorus pedal for a subtle swash of…immersive ambient gooeyness

  • Great video really shows the versatility of it. For versatility I can’t imagine a better tone shaping tool than the Boss GE7 equaliser….essential in a gig box.

  • The Phasse 90 that is the one to get is the MXR Custom Shop '74 Phase 90 that only ran on battery and doesn't have an on light. I find every other model is too much. The most subtle The sound.

  • Thanks for the video! MXR Poly Blue Octave is infinitely more versatile than a phase 90, even the phase 45 is more versatile than the 90

  • You don't even have the most versatile mxr phaser the phase 95 has more sounds as well as a phase 100

  • Please help! My phase 90 adds an insane amount of unwanted noise to my signal chain and i dont know what to do???? i love the sound of a phaser so much but its ruining my tone. What phaser should i get that doesn’t add a layer of gain? I’m thining the keeley vintage phaser but if anyone knows other quiet phaser options lmk 🙁 ????

  • I got a ibanez phase pedal back in 70s been on every board since .i think it is the same deal as the mxr

  • Ahh. The little Orange box that finds it's way on to everybody's board. I never consider these tonal "cheats" when I use these "go-to" positions. Only that it gets along w/ everything you can mix it with. Lately, I've been using it with dial all the way down to get a real nice swell. This has left me wondering where'd the Phase 45 go? Using the 90, and 45 together would be a trip!

  • I'm gonna give this an A for effort. You put a lot of great "String English" and playing style into making this work, but at the end of the day, it sounded like a Phaser. If you didn't say what you were playing I would have said "It's a Phaser" every clip. Phaser as Univibe was passable. A 4 knob Flanger is the REAL most versatile pedal!

  • Did you ever mention when combining with the dirt and delay pedals what order sounded best for your various MXR Ph 90 settings?

  • Do you need a fuzz pedal for the uni vibe sound? Or it's just the MXR Phase 90 and overdrive/distortion?

  • I dig 'em! I have the MXR Van Halen striped one… it's just a Phase I'm going thru. *cough cough*, ahem…
