Guitar Center is a making a comeback?! Find out more during the ThroBak Guitar Lounge Podcast Guitargument.
In today’s Guitargument and Cool Down Jon Gundry and Matthew Quail of ThroBak Electronics argue whether or not Guitar Center is staging a comeback that is resulting in higher store traffic, a larger selection of used gear, higher prices for used gear and a storewide effort to acquire and sell used guitars.
The podcast starts with ThroBak viewer mail comments about the previous episode’s comparison of USA made Alnico magnets vs Chinese made Alnico magnets.
In the Player Grade Vintage segment Jon Gundry shows a 1967 Gibson J50 acoustic guitar and explains the details that make the guitar fall in to the collectable player grade vintage guitar category.
Following the Guitargument ThroBak’s own Paul Hudson quizzes Matthew and Jon about their guitar knowledge.
In the Rorschach Riffs segment Matthew plays four bass guitar riffs that Jon Gundry and the rest of the audience must identify.
Then Paul Hudson gives a Top 10 List of complaints wife’s have about their guitar playing husband.
Following this Matthew muses musical about recent concert he attended and also talks about the appearance of ThroBak pickups on a major event stage.

There are three GC's reasonably near me. They vary widely, from one that is a showcase for GC, to one that I used ONLY because it is the closest and convenient. However, the last time I was in there, no less than three people greeted me like they knew me – including the Grumpy Manager who usually sneers at me for playing upper level guitars. Those that walked by as I was playing asked if I wanted any help "just speak up".
I read very recently that they had actually told their people to say hello to customers as part of the new CEO's attempts to fix what's wrong there.
Bottom line: I like to be able to play guitars before buying. I like 45 days return periods even on used gear. I like having GC around a lot more than not have any local retailers at all.
I drove 20 miles to a local store to buy a guitar polishing cloth because I knew I could buy it there and be home in less time than it would take me for Guitar Center worker to say hi. Guitar Center stores suck.
I don't go to Guitar Center anymore. There a bunch of self centered bitches that won't give you the time of day. There too good to sell you anything.
We need
'The World Needs to Know About Buterate Bobbins' T-shirts!
Over 1 hour videos and you just drag on and on not getting to the point. The 2 of you like hearing yourself talk and little to nothing about what you're talking about.
Sounds like joe rogan!!
I have a player grade 1967 Gibson J50 that I bought in early 1968 when I was 18 years old. That guitar has seen some serious use and also a bit of abuse. I took care of it, but never babied it. A drunken friend broke the back at a party. I had the tuners replaced by the luthier when he repaired the back an side from that incident. The finish is about as crazed as you will ever find. Lots of chips as well. Recently, I had the bridge reglued, a bone saddle I made reshaped, braces reglued and a setup done by a top notch luthier (sorry, I can't help mention that he works as luthier and guitar tech for that rock band with the initials R.S.) It now plays as well and sounds as good (probably better) than it ever did. Lots and lots of memories, too. So this guitar is staying for me for the duration!
I have never bought anything from GC. But, I have bought ALL my used from Reverb.
???? Top ten list ????
I’d say our GC in northern Colorado is really decent. The help is good and well stocked. Could have more USA made guitars.
And why not?
Experienced players wouldn't mind actually playing something they actually might want to buy.
The only reason I will go to Guitar Center anymore is strictly for used gear. Mostly because you can see and play the stuff before buying, as opposed to trying to buy stuff on Marketplace or Reverb. I've learned not to purchase anything that you might need tech support for, because they don't have that. Sweetwater does, so they are the only place I will buy that sort of gear from. The closest Guitar Center to me has really crappy parking too. Phil McKnight was telling Guitar Center's CEO right.
The good stores don't do that. Guitar Center or not. My local GC is great. They don't bother me, but they're there if I have questions. I know all of the sales people, and they know who I am.
My older brother was a huge Jam fan so I recognized town called malice right away. Bruce Foxton is an underrated bass player and sings great backup as well.
I have only ever bought used gear from GC. (Truth is, most of their "new" kit is in used condition.) I setup Google alerts for specific guitars I am in interested in on the used market, and if something pops-up (at the right price/condition) I have it shipped to my local GC. I only ever go in for an order pickup or return. The whole GC in-store vibe is not particularly conducive to a positive browsing/buying experience. At least two or three times each year I make a point of visiting my local-ish Mom & Pop shop – Woodsy's Music – in Kent (and Medina), Ohio. Great folks, quality gear, excellent service. Cheers!
I have had the invisible man experience at Guitar Center too.
