What if it feels more natural to do it down?
I do everything but the anchoring way what I do is anchor with my pick ontop of the neck.
This allows me to slide up and down with the tapping hand while also keeping my place.

I usually use the edge of my pick for tapping, so it has a sound as if it were also a plucked note
You just need to tap the strings not pull the finger off too. It will sound the same

You're also faster if you tap pull off up rather than down, like you flex your fingers motion is faster than extending
