  • Thanks for giving some insight. I recently smashed Windows into the well deserved trash bin and switched to Linux Mint. Used Cubase and Amplitube. But on Linux I'll do some more research and build up something nice and powerful with open source plugins. Probably will go with Reaper to test it out (EDIT: No, I actually settled on Ardour since it reminds me a lot more of what I was working with, which is nice) … Coming from Windows to Linux is a beautiful experience, at least for me. Never felt so free and good whilst working with my computer – plus you learn something new everyday. All the best!

  • Hi! I just wanted to ask since this wasn't covered in the video, but what are your thoughts about how this plugin works as a bass amp? If not, what would you recommend as a bass amp for Linux? Thanks!

  • Please take a look at Neural Rack. It is written by the developer of Ratatouille and guitarix. Light on DSP. Neatly designed similar to NAM Universal.
By looking at how often past updates were released, I think it will be actively developed in the future.

  • Ratatouille can also open JSON files, which are usually used by RTNeural-based plugins such as AIDA-X

  • Recently discovered AIDA-X, as CLAP plugin; works with NAM profiles very well and seems to be lightweight. Switched from M. Oliphant's NAM version, happy so far. 😉

  • What about the AIDA-X plugin? Have you tried it? I found it to be even less resource consuming than NAM lv2

  • Nice comparison. I'd be pretty curious if the sound is exactly the same or if there are some minor variations between these, though. Would be cool to record a track, re-amp it and compare the frequency response graphs.

  • I would recommend Dusty Tube over NAM Universal. Much simpler, less overhead, also some advanced stuff like a presence and depth knob.

  • Also, Ratatouille is available as an LV2 for Windows, and I think Mac, as well, but I'm not sure. LV2 technically stands for LADSPA Version 2. Brummer10, who makes Guitarix, the UI for the LV2 NAM, and also Ratatouille, also makes the Tone Twist plugs, and those are also available as VST3 and LV2 for Windows and Linux. Also, last I saw Steve, at a mutual friend's birthday party, I was talking to him about how great Linux support has become, and he apparently has regular contact with FalkTX and Brummer10 online. He was also super excited about how many companies were either using NAM to make their own models, or implementing a fully exposed NAM with profile loading into part of their product. He especially liked Audio Assault and Tonacracy for their implementation, and was interested to see all these new pedals that were either converting NAM to their own format or using it outright. I still want either a DIMEHEAD NAM Player or a MOD Dwarf.

  • I know Steve, the guy who makes NAM, personally. He lives in Seattle, and I live in Tacoma. Somewhere on my facebook page there is photo of us on stage at El Corazon for an improv jam.
Personally, I'm fond of either the NAM LV2, Ratatouille LV2, or the implementation found in Audio Assault's Amp Locker and Bass Locker suites as a USD $5 unlock.
Using the NAM LV2 or Ratatouille in mod desktop is pretty nice, too. I use NAM profiles of either an EL34 power amp to play my ampless rig with the cab sim turned off, or I play my Orange Super Crush's XLR out into it, with an IR of my Seismic Audio cab or the Audio Assault 3D Citrus cab, usually redback or G12K-100. I have my own NAM's of my pedals and gear, too.

Funny story, I installed NAM for the first time and tried making my own profiles the night before I met Steve, which was purely by accident. TIMING!!! LMAO

  • This was very helpful. I use the NAM native LV2 currently but its nice to know about the options. Seeing the gate and IR chain was nice as then its easy to swap in / out amp sims. The IR loader though doesn't show let me specify a file so i had to use mirkko2 instead.

  • About NeuralDSP, beware that it uses iLok. If at all possible, I'd avoid anything iLok on Linux… That said, I had the Darkglass plugin running at some point.

  • Awesome video!
Just so you know, the "bug" with the NAM Universal MIGHT get fixed if you run "winetricks dxvk" – I don't know for sure because I have never used NAM Universal, however the same thing used to happen on Overloud TH-U and I fixed it that way!

  • Hello folks, can someone give me some clue of how to transpose guitars on linux without adding a ton of latency?

  • I've got errors with ratatouille : Isndfile.hh: no file or folder of that name

I've tried to copy/paste the terminal answer but my comment is removed I think that it's considered mailicious code on YT.

By the way I tried in guitarix but yu can't load an IR so…

  • I'm curious if the higher processing usage of those Windows VST's got something to do with Yabridge (extra overhead?).
Maybe I should install the same plugin as Windows VST as a Linux native one on my system, to find out…

  • Thanks for detailed explanations. I also tried Ratatouille and felt positive. BTW, have you tried "MOD Desktop"? I'd appreciate it if you review it and share your thoughts.

  • Ratatouille comes to us from the same developer who gives us Guitarix so one can expect greatness there as well. I have yet to try NAM as I've been down for a bit and not playing but I hope to be able to check it out soon.

  • I've played arround with guitarix and the NAM lv2, haven't check out the other ones yet.
NAM is an amazing tech, the best digital clean tones I've got!

You the goat for sharing this stuff for the linux side ????????
