THIS is Why EVERYONE LOVES the BOSS SD1 Super OverDrive Pedal | 4 Ways to make it sound AWESOME!!
So if you keep seeing this little yellow pedal on every pedalboard and you don’t know why, let me tell you — this is probably the most underrated guitar pedal ever made by BOSS.
Welcome back to the channel! Here we talk about everything music — from Death Metal to Queen and everything in between. In today’s video, I’ll break down why the BOSS SD-1 Super Overdrive, released back in 1981, instantly became a modern classic and why it’s still on every guitarist’s board more than 40 years later.
I’ll show you 4 different ways to make the SD-1 sound amazing — right out of the box. Whether you’re using it on a clean amp for a creamy, harmonic-rich crunch, or stacking it with distortion to tighten your low end and boost your leads, this pedal just works.

FOR EVER; My Marshall JCM800 2203 + Roland SD-1 = ????
Thanks man. I’ve had this pedal for over 10 years and I feel like I haven’t unleashed its true capabilities. I play clean boost mostly, with some gritty edge sometimes. Definitely will try ur recipe!
“A very clean guitar” says the guy playing a guitar with a dirty sound
I have the pedal and not excited about it as well as Blues Driver…
Got my first one 40 some odd years ago and have had several. Right now I have two, and I use them both. Pure love❤
I hate that pedal
it's a shame that the clean volume is a bit shorter than it should
Great pedal
Can a boss power stack st-2 sound good with a super overdrive to get thrash metal tone?
Kinda badly out of tune buds and your clean amp tone is a little distorted, im not trying to be a dick ,i dont have this pedal so just being a bit picky ,already have the DS1 so might get on board with the DS1, thanks for the vid!
How can it be underrated if everybody uses it? 🙂
tf is that necklace
Very good to scoop up mids
brought myself one of these a few months back for $100 dollars Australian and I've got to say it's easily my favourite pedal I've used so far has made my amp sound so much better definitely one of the best cheap pedals out there
Awesome, I got the 40th anniversary SD-1 a few years back (love the black with yellow writing). I haven't really used it much as don't use pedals that often – as mentioned in your DS-1 video, I'm generally using my BlackStar ID 260 TVP or amp sims. I need to explore with the BlackStar though.
I've also got the Orange Fur Coat fuzz. Strat – fuzz – clean amp – BOOM ???? sounds insanely good.
Hola Pat, tenes idea si hay alguna diferencia de sonido entre el amarillo y el naranja?
Hi Pat, do you recommend me to buy a compressor? I know it's very used for clean stuff and Gilmour's tone but I heard that you can also use it for high gain. I mainly play distorted guitar (often thrash metal and death) and I don't know if a compressor could help me. For example, in order to play the intro of the song Blacklist (Exodus obv) you need to play the sixth string "open" (I mean the D note, the tuning is D standard) and that partially overcomes the other notes of the intro. So the overall sound isn't clear, maybe a compressor would be useful in this case. What do you think? Thank so much for every video, keep going!
Nice pedal for rock, blues, country…basicly everything ????
Got a DS-1 (not my thing) and ProCo RAT (great!) as an Ibanez 850 Overdrive (EHX BM clone).
My SD-1 and TS9 are best friends. The SD-1 gives a nice growl on its own, and the TS9 stacks with it perfectly to turn that growl into a roar.
I love how it colours clean channel. Some people don't, but SD-1 has a sound on its own. And ones you turn it on, you just get all those classics into your head in an instand. It's 80's sound.
I love my sd-1. It's on my pedalboard, volume on max, tone on about bit more than half, overdrive just a bit. It's the second pedal after my tuner, than into an sub-octaver and a distortion…sometimes I'm changing the distortion pedal, but never my ds-1. It's just perfect for low tuned guitars and baritone.
As someone who is new to tube amps, I bought a DSL 40CR a few months ago, and this pedal in front and an EQ in the loop… It woke this amp up! The biggest sound this pedal gets is in the crunch channel that is supposed to emulate the JCM800. I push the channel volume hard (3 o'clock) and use the master volume pots as an attenuator to keep it at a reasonable bedroom level volume. I assume the pre amp is getting pushed pretty hard already and this pedal seems to punch it into the next level. It goes from AC/DC, or a decent Led Zeppelin sound, without the pedal and then goes into a No More Tears sound with the pedal. That's a pretty strong boost! I've always been a fan on Zakk's sound on that record and keep that sound as my base sound.
My LP is a little bit dark sounding with the 490/498 (but that 498 really seems to like that high gain) setup, so I dime the level and tone and just push the drive to maybe 9 o'clock for that sweet spot. I only put the amp gain at about 1 o'clock as well as it starts to turn to mud after that point. I tried the 6/6/6 setup on the pedal and it's ok, but the 10/10/2 works better for me. Every amp and guitar is going to be different.
The SD1 works pretty well in the OD1 channel as well, making it sound as if I am using a properly dialed in Metal Zone without all of the negative stereotype attributes. I put the MZ in the loop and the OD1/SD1 setup is pretty close to that sound making that the pedal no longer needed, allowing for an opening on the board for something else. The OD2 doesn't need this pedal as there is honestly way more gain than needed built in. I actually just use a compressor pedal on it to help re-shape the EQ that can get lost and can get a somewhat Rectifier sound. Somewhat. It's not bad either in the clean channel as a distortion pedal. Not great, but not bad.
I am honestly considering buying a second DSL40 for a stereo rig. As far as the SD1, it's easily the best $40 I ever spent on a pedal. I also have a Noise Suppressor in the 4 cable method that quiets the front and the loop. It really helps you hear exactly what this pedal is doing for your sound. Thanks again for your help with that pedal. It was on mute and I didn't notice it… haha
I have the Sd1 on my board just can’t go wrong with it another there’s a lot of boutique builders out there, but you just can’t go wrong with this
