Rig Rundown – Wayne Krantz
Article and photos: http://bit.ly/WayneKrantzRR
Premier Guitar caught up with Wayne Krantz in Nashville at City Winery on the first date of his two-month tour to discuss his pragmatic approach to gear.
Wayne Krantz goes live without a net, touring with a single guitar, an S-style loaner from John Suhr. The Suhr has a very useable whammy bar, maple neck, and Suhr ML (Michael Landau) vintage-style single-coil pickups. Krantz opts for big-top/ skinny-bottom D’Addario strings (.011, .013, .017, .026, .032, .038).
During his Nashville show Krantz plugged into a stock Fender Blues DeVille 2×12 on loan from his driver. He ran out of the Fender into his personal amp, a Marshall 2553 Silver Jubilee with a matching 2×12 mini cabinet. Krantz picked up the Marshall on eBay years ago, and the two have had a warm working relationship ever since.

I paused this at 9.12 when Krantz said Gary Lucus's guitar sounded great, I think pesonally Lucus was a big influence on his sound.
The interviewer sounds a bit like juraj slafkosky and that's ok
I love how he is all about the music and not so much the gear.
"Man, I have to carry that stuff!" what I'm telling anyone who says I need more gear
Is he daisy chaining from the Devilles input to the Marshals input? or he has a direct out from the Fender?! i wondering, it seems the 2nd input is doing the job!
I joined Wayne's patreon in 2020 and he had over 230 paid members, now he has 110. I deleted my membership because he would regularly give off a shitty attitude towards people asking questions that he didn't like. All of the questions were just about art and music. A bunch of us messaged each other about this. And he wonders why he isn't as successful as he would like to be.
Wayne blocks people on his patreon even though he's the one with a bad attitude. He regularly loses members because of his attitude. The guy has a video of him shirtless on the front page of his website. He has some serious ego issues.

This guy sounds like me! Guitar, amp and pedals
Pete Woodroffe Music
Such an interesting guitarist!
You'd never know he plays busy-busy tough-tough.
THIS IS AWESOME!
Wayne is a monster, creative musician. I was so lucky to have been turned on to his work way back in early 2000s by a great drummer and friend, Christopher Allis. Thanks ,Chris!
????
Wayne's rig currently involves clean Fender Deluxes, and distortion from a pedal. No Marshalls, no tube gain.
Krantz = God
Mono for the win! Wayne is too damn good. Amazing rig rundown! Thank You John and Premier Guitar!
One of PG's greatest rundowns. What a legend, such tones, such creativity.
monster guitarist.check this https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rmqj585mmBw (and john, always pleasure to watch and hear….real cat).
freeze is buffered
He’s like a Smurf
Wayne's got a great tone!…great person too!
God love Wayne Krantz, the Woody Allen of guitar. We love you Wayne!????????
He is just too humble. He is a legend and a monster player. Someone should remind him of that.
Couple of great guys…nice to watch
10:07 "Well theres no money in jazz and being in a band as an adult is not financially sustainable…..anyway, lets check out my pedals?"
I just discovered Wayne and I love his attitude toward the gear and more importantly toward music. Thanks for another great episode.
17:04 The Jimmy Herring reverb story is classic.
I feel like he is just such a badass at playing that the gear is such a minor thing. He could make a piece of shit guitar and a trash amp sound good.
Such a cool guy! and refreshingly honest.
Proof positive that gear is not the answer; practice is.
Really funny guy, almost self deprecating, and he is one of the best guitarists out there. Really admire his funky, clever playing.
Wayne, you should check out the analogman sunface nkt. I’m kind of in a similar boat. A lot of the players I love use fuzz…Gilmour, Hendrix, Billy Corgan, etc…but I’ve just never been able to make it work for my playing. The analogman nkt is the first fuzz that’s made me say “whoa…I could actually use this”
Great stuff!
Interviewed by Superman.
That wasn't a dig, I'm saying he literally looks like Superman.
Would have liked have heard him play! Unusual.
Good interview, revealing how musicians sometimes think – excellent.
Vertex have been sticking their badge on the BBE Ben Wah. then selling them at an inflated price.
Cool guy
8:20 – "Essentially I guess I believe that any piece of gear — as long as it's functional — the main thing is to figure out how to make THAT sound good, whatever it is." Jesus Christ it is so refreshing to hear someone say that, especially a guy as good as Krantz.
Inspiring individual in these gear crazy times(2019), I wonder if Wayne is still doing this setup?
i like his simplistic approach to gear. Whatever you have make it work for you…
You can tell Krantz is the real deal by how he talks about the gear. The reverence isn't really there, he's basically just assessing the tools and how well they do the job of translating his musical thoughts. Also you can tell by his playing and compositions! haha
I saw this guy at Berklee college and let’s just say the show was one to remember lmao
guitarists have become SO obsessed with pedals and chips and shootouts, guys all playing the same blues licks demoing the latest tube screamer, true bypass etc…It's sad when a great artist like Wayne has more views on a video of what pedals he uses than any of his actual musical performances.
didn't play one lick…fk what a waste of space sheeeesh
