Thanks for watching and playing along with me! My name is Stuart Lehman-Brown, a teacher, music store owner, and musician in the San Francisco Bay Area. After graduating from Berklee College of Music in Boston, I set up shop performing and teaching here in the North Bay. 15 years and 50,000 lessons later I’m still going strong, and sooner or later I’m afraid I’m going to start posting videos of my dogs. It’s inevitable.

  • I actually think the bass advice is pretty good. When I was in my late teens/early 20s, bass guitar was the first instrument I picked up and tried to learn. I didn't get very far: learned some fundamentals and how to play a few songs. But fast forward about 20 years and now picking up acoustic guitar in my 30s, and I feel like a lot of those fundamentals from bass has helped me.

  • Iam not sure if I am really bad at guitar, which usually means I am. Stewie, please do an Echo and the Bunnymen lesson. Btw Stewie, you must be right about your story. Because only someone that was bad at guitar, can actually fake that well at being bad.

  • You missed the most important tip. Make sure your guitar is properly set UP!!! I have seen many folks quit because their guitar was unplayable. High action, medium to heavy strings. I got into guitar repair and setup to help others have a guitar they could play. Play difficult parts very slowly until you can play the part perfectly. I started out with an unplayable guitar, trying to learn how to fingerpick ragtime music. Big mistake, difficult songs, much harder than struming, so I struggled until I tried some John Denver, America, Eagles etc.(1970s). The mirror works great, but you can also record yourself. Who doesn't have a phone or camera on their computer. Take lessons from a great instructor. It will be the best money you can spend.

  • here’s my breakdown of the tips…1. practice strumming: down, down, up, up, down 2. choose a song to play (enter sandman) 3. if basics aren’t working, abandon 4. if guitar aint working, play bass and 5. play along with songs (easier said) ????

  • Honestly reminds me of my MS days. I was able to help others with their finger placement. But I couldn't play a chord to save my life. Now I have a guitar of my own and I'm back trying to learn again!

    Thank you Uncle Stuart!!

  • Hey, we’re all bad when we first start no doubt about it but we improve over the years if we stick with it. I found out taking shortcuts really make you suck after playing for 52 years to me. There are no shortcuts you learn to play, smooth and fluently And learn how to manipulate your fingers and which ones to use without having to fiddle around figuring out what you’re trying to do playing guitar is a real form of art. I’ve been doing it for 52 years and I love it. I sucked for 10 years and now I don’t feel like I suck anymore. I can basically play anything I want reading music is the key to plane guitar you wanna get good you don’t wanna have to second-guess anything and set for hours. Trying to figure out something. Learn how to read music you won’t go wrong. I’ve been doing that too for 42 years. I’m a longtime guitarist even play some gigs once in a while not too bad for an old fart no arthritis in my fingers. Also, I have a photogenic memory. Once I learn a song. I never forget it. My brain is piled with music with no blocking and no forgetting how It’s played. The doctors are totally amazed with me. I guess I’m just pure lucky. Have a great day and keep playing. It’s good for the soul. Have a great day.????????????????????????????????????????
