PG contributor Tom Butwin explores the new BOSS XS‑100 Poly Shifter—an 8-octave powerhouse that lets guitarists and bassists go from subtle drop-tuning to full-on pitch chaos with expression pedal and MIDI control. From transforming a standard guitar into a baritone to turning a 4-string bass into a five-string monster, this pedal offers both inspiring sounds and real gig-day utility.

  • You tried Tom. The other great utility of this pedal is to hold your laundry room door open whilst you bring in the hamper.

  • I've found that the Poly Capo on the HX One (Helix), developed by the same Digitech team, is better in latency and tone than the Whammy DT. Have you been able to compare the Poly Capo on the HX One (Helix) with the Boss XS-1 Poly Shifter? I'm torn between the two pedals, knowing of course that the HX is a multi-effects pedal (one effect at a time) and the Boss is a dedicated multi-effects pedal.

  • I can't stand the synthetic shrillness of the high octaves, it's as musical as a ring modulator connected to a reverb spring thrown down a flight of stairs.

  • One other feature that was not shown in this demo was using this pedal as a chorus pedal. It sounds fantastic.

  • I use the DigiTech Bass Whammy for this exact function so I do not have to take multiple instruments on a gig. All of the extra features are nice but I highly doubt for the few bucks up charge that it's really worth it. You can get a DigiTech Whammy used for far cheaper these days and most players I don't see are going to use the extra features. I'd also be willing to bet that the algorithm running the pitch shifting is the same one that Digitech uses.
