Total beginner – how to finger the strings and frets on your guitar

Here’s a beginner’s tip on how to place your fingers on the guitar strings for best sound. It’s one of the first steps in learning guitar. Place your finger just behind the fret, work with it until it’s clear and not buzzing or muffled. Remember to try and keep only enough pressure on the string to get a good sound. With a tip like this, you get a good start on your guitar lessons.

  • This seems very helpful ???? I had this other guy just jumping into a mainstream song and that isn't helping at all …

I don't know what "6" , "5" … Etc … And then the "Lines" apparently represent the strings just backwards ????‍????

  • I’ve played off and on for 30 years, but never really getting past beginner. I got pretty decent in the early 2000s, mostly mimicking songs via Tabs or visual lessons, but due to an acute onset of autoimmune diseases in 2012, got stopped dead in my tracks. I lost much of the dexterity and my hands are quite shakey. Being disabled and unable to work, and finding it difficult to pass the hours in each day, I thought I’d give it one more go.

While I may never be accomplished, I figure I can still make Some type of music on this thing. My new strategy is to start from scratch and act like I know nothing, and also film myself just to document how bad I started to, hopefully, be able to look back on days I’m not feeling confident. Having learned on my own thru the years, I never took the time to work on the basics…strumming properly, holding the guitar and fretboard accurately, and working on proper finger alignment.

I appreciate people like you who provide fundamental guidance and not just “play your favorite song” videos. Kindest regards.

  • I have one very, actually extremely pressing problem I am having as a beginner. Everytime I try to fret and lift my finger off it always makes a sound, and it completely messes up everything. I am not trying to do a pull-off I just want to take my fingers of the string without it making any noise

  • Maybe its because I am a beginner but it feels like my new yamaha Pacifica 112j I really have to press hard to fret a string especially near the head of the guitar. Thats why I feel like I cant play fast. Is this normal? I heard that its necessary to fix that so that the strings are to top far up which would make it harder to play in comparison if the strings would be lower.

  • My problem is when i play a note on a string, the finger mutes the string below it. The only "solution" is to play exactly on my fingertips right next to the nails but that makes me very uncomfortable especially if im standing up. When i place my fingers on the thickest string lets say 1st finger on 5th fret, my 1st finger touches the string below it too. Like if in some song i were to play 6th string 5th fret with my 1st finger and then i had to play the open 5th string it wouldnt work at all cause my 1st finger is muting the string below it. what can i do? I dont wanna play the thicker string with my fingertips cause that causes my wirst to bend a lot.
