I got a lightly used G-55 classical but cannot find which finish to use on the back…. It was a Taiwan-made one and I bought iit for little or nothing…. It sounds great..
As a professional luthier myself, I disagree with something on the playability aspect.
One should expect that any guitar not sold by a small shop with a tech/luthier on staff will need a setup.
I'd much rather spend 1k on a guitar with amazing resonance, clarity, sustain, etc that needs an $80-160 setup than a 1k guitar that sounds like a brick but has an amazing setup out of the box.
One can be fixed. The other must be replaced.
I think the same principle applies to all guitars – if you have $500 to spend you buy a $350 guitar and immediately hand it off to a luthier for a proper setup. Money spent on the setup will give you far more value than anything else you'd get with a bit more pricier guitar
I bought a Yamaha FS 800 for $300. I'm impressed by it and many others think it's a lot more expensive of a guitar type than it is. I play jazz, blues, and spanish music with it. It also can do ALL THREE CHORDS in Cheech and Chong's Earache My Eye
I'm trying out nylon string "classical" guitar, mostly from playing steel string and baritone uke. Yamaha C40, $189 (2025, no case) is IMHO beyond excellent for the price. So lightly built and I'm actually stunned a laminate soundboard instrument sounds and plays so well. Like my others, I hang it right behind me on the wall of my office, so always available. The strings are decent, but I bet an upgrade for small $ will be well worth it. If I were you, just wondering about classical/Spanish/whatever fingerstyle, I'd just get one delivered and see for yourself.
Great advice mostly, but ignore #1: forget about budget. Play a bunch of guitars, find some you like, figure out what it is you like about those ones, pick one in your price range. There is no minimum, and maximum is up to you.
I agree on the resell value. I have bought so many instruments that I ended up changing my mind on and just reselling for more than I bought it for.
I only buy used. I specifically get amazing deals on OfferUp. You'd be surprised what people are willing to give up for a low price. I got like $700 worth of instruments for a hundred bucks. A Luna Banjolele, a classical Epiphone guitar with a hard case, and a violin????
I have a Yamaha C40 and the melody was fantastic.
What kind of guitar he was holding???
I started on a Beaver Creek BCTD601- Which sounded really good for about $200 CAD. Its been 5 years, I play it pretty much daily- save for like a 2 year brake when I was using another guitar- and it still feel brand new.
1000 for a brand new guitar is a pretty good baseline. and if you can find something that punches above it's weight for 7 or 800, that's great. i'd say go play a bunch of them and learn what to listen for. learn what you like. learn what quality feels and sounds like.
He has something really against guitars under 1000$ ????
Hi Marshall ????
what is the backround song at 6:50 called ?
6:00 my biggest issue living in a hot and humid environment. I just ordered a new guitar because my current one has become practically unplayable with how the neck has warped and am kicking myself for not looking harder for one that has a truss rod knowing even if the neck comes perfect I know eventually given my environment that it will warp. ????
I have a background in piano and professional vocals, but have always wanted to learn guitar, now I have time and was wondering your opinion on Cordoba C5 Ce? I know I need to feel it myself but hearing it used by others, it sounds so stylistically versatile and playfully hypnotic.I’m also a petite piano-fingered lefty and it looks good for eventual plucking technique without having to upgrade guitars. If you have any opinions on it or others you think I can add to the list of considerations under 700, please do! This next bit may get a little long, but I promise, it’s nauseatingly full of praises and thank yous! This has been exhausting!. With all the over saturation of “first guitar buying guide” YouTube click bait videos and an over saturated market specifically aimed at first time buyers, it’s taken me a year to feel I can confidently make a choice…I’m so glad I came by your video before just giving up! Thank you! Who’d think it would be so hard to hear actual good tips to drown out all the unhelpful noise, actually making it feel less daunting! You actually gave some great practical advice I didn’t hear in any other video. You know, things that ACTUALLY felt like one only learns from experience and not another showroom tour. Am I crazy? Bc they seemed to fit into one or both of these categories: “buying your first guitar? Watch this video before you buy” and it’s just a guitar specs 101… which is fine and important to understand but if anything, it just widened my focus with extra unnecessary bandwidth instead of simplifying it to advice from experience. The second bunch are clearly just promoting a set of models or specific brand that sponsored the video. Thank you forgiving some real much needed advice. The reasoning for avoiding under $300 and even more so for used made so much sense and so many videos are out there ranking $200 guitars (the same bunch keep getting chosen) by experienced guitarists now feels even ickier. They sounded awful too which is even more dishonest. I also am so glad you mentioned the too shiny top wood warning is something, it all really felt like finally someone is trying to be helpful! Im a big proponent of used instruments and for being the only ones apparently to highlight to opportunities in buying used, is something musicians all know but then they won’t get that check from Yamaha. I’m now looking forward to the whole idea again! Thanks!
I had to order my first guitar off of the Internet because no brick and mortar within hundreds of miles had inventory, except for one that only carried guitars that cost $5k+. Fingers crossed all of my research and review reading pays off.

I noticed this when I bought my first premium guitar, no finish. It's miles better, the neck seems thicker and it's a flawless finish. So nice to play.
Excellent information thankyou
What size classical is your one ,I find full and 7/8hard to reach not comfortable
Oh my oh my… What a beautiful piece you wrote. Making me want to try this kind of instrument myself.
Would want to see more of these type of guitars with you. Maybe a test/review video of several different models?
Thank you for a great video and channel. You earned a new follower!
I"m watching this video after buying my first classical guitar. I've played fpr 20 years but never tried classical. i saw a second hand spanish made guitar for sale. its an esteve 4ST. I love it, it has a very warm sound.
When you talk about playability, is this what people sometimes refer to as action? You didn’t really describe how to evaluate playability. Thanks.
Would you recommend something like Manuel Rodriguez Magistral F-C?
Hey guys… this video is invaluable… especially for the beginner guitarist who doesn't quite know what to look for in purchasing an instrument. I can vouch for Marshall's expertise, as he recommended my gorgeous Wolfgang Jellinghaus Signature Doubletop. What really works for me is the narrower neck, which makes playing way easier for someone with smaller hands. So, not only does my guitar have a great sound, but it is easily playable as well. I wish I would have considered guitar scale/neck width back when I was a guitar major in college. Back then, I truly struggled with a guitar that was way too large with its 664mm scale length. (Back then, scale length wasn't even considered… today it is vital to know before purchase!) While 650mm is standard, a shorter scale (640mm or even 630mm) might be way easier to play.
I want that luthier t shirt ❤
300$ minimum? I spent 70-80$ on my first classical guitar and I have had it for 9 years. Still plays. ????
Man these two are so much fun, and also very knowledgeable. Fantastic video
You either started college a year ago and a super natural genius guitar talent or you know Marshall a very long time. Anyways..somewhere around 1970 my mother got a yamaha G-100 classical guitar from my dad…and you guessed it, she never touched the thing and its a wonder it was not forgotten to take with us the times we moved house. Then one day I met a friend who played guitar and instantly I recognised the shape and knew we had such a box stored somewhere. After a year I took some classical guitar lessons and my teacher wanted to have a go with it. I was floored how he opened up the sound..I have it to this day and still play it often. Side note: my teacher wanted to buy my guitar and I decided to stop taking lessons..this teacher had not my progress in mind ..
Informative video. What is the guitar you are holding? Didn’t know classical guitar came with a strap. I’m interested in getting one.
