I did take some classical lessons in college, and I like the sound of a nylon string guitar for many things. Tying strings is a skill, but once you do it a couple times you get the hang of it and they do take quite a bit longer to fully stretch into tuning stability. The action is usually higher, but not so much that it should be causing intonation issues. My (cheaper) classical guitar currently has some intonation issues. I never got far enough along to get that far up the neck in lessons, so I'm unsure if that was how it came…or if issues accumulated with how long I let it sit before picking it up again recently. This is a very nice sounding (and looking guitar) Jayce. I like to have mine around as my "couch guitar".
What you tell at the beginning was exactly what I thought before you said it.
Would be an excellent start up guitar or student guitar.
No disrespect intended…but I have no idea what the point is in reviewing a particular classical guitar when you have no clue about classical guitars or playing them at all.
1st, Through the Snark tuner in the bin (trash) and get a decent tuner. I've had three Snarks and they are Junk. 2nd, I may have missed it but I did not hear you mention the brand/model of this guitar.
Fun video. I started guitar on classical, so I have a few comments, none intended as angry or mocking, etc.
Most classical guitarist I know tune in standard tuning, if they do anything different it would be drop D for a low Eb and/or D, but there’s always some who might use other tunings.
By the bridge is the tailpiece. Same as a steel string, just that you typically tie the strings on.
They’re lots of fun.
Jayce, any thoughts on the Boss ME 90?
Hey Jayce,
Some say classical guitar action is set higher to help with resonance or tone and volume. Some are constructed with raised fingerboards not only to keep it off the top so it vibrates more freely but also help with the action. Off course never use ball end strings if the guitar has a standard tie-block. Strings are usually packaged by category Xtra hard, hard, soft tension etc. Cedar tops provide a more broken in sound with warmer overtones while spruce usually takes breaking in, sometimes months even years to reach their full potential. Somebody mentioned Hauser and of course there are many high end makers to choose from like Field, Braun, Brogger, Romero and Contreras just to name a few but, you better be packing heavy to purchase one and forget about the likes of Torres, Esteso and Simplicio. Those are for collectors that have nothing else to do with their money. I've owned several classicals the nicest of mine was made by Alhambra. Cordoba makes a decent guitar from entry level to intermediate.
You don’t have to play it with fingernails. Even in the 1800s era, playing with the flesh of your fingers was fairly common.
Boy if i could play an classical guitar that would be great!! But i need the pickups to hide my amatuer skill level!! I have no idea how those very talented players just rip those acoustics!!!
I'd be lost too if handed a classical guitar but it's nice to see you "on the road again" reviewing acoustic guitars. I have electrics and acoustics but tend to gravitate to acoustics these days. I'm trying to remedy that bias with the recent purchase of a Firefly FF338PRO. Yep, it's not a McFly; it's a Firefly.
You haven´t played a Hauser.
In recent years, due to his arthritis, Keith Richards has played nylon stringed guitars including classical styled bodies on stage and in other situations like late night TV. There’s a great interview of him on The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon where he’s playing on a classical guitar with his E string removed. He played a few Stones samples and it still sounded like him playing on an electric. I totally recommend checking that interview out. Also, Tim Henson made a nylon string TOD10N he designed with Ibanez popular in the last few years. The action is much lower on his style guitar because it’s modeled off flamenco style guitars with much lower action, but most classical style guitars have higher action.
You can play whatever you want on a classical guitar. Some people prefer the wide neck. Or you can get a more modern take on the nylon like the TOD10N. Although I’d love to learn flamenco style songs as a challenge, it would be fun to rock out on a nylon guitar! It’s easy on the fingers, has a unique tone, and the strings respond differently.
Also, I once tried to restring my friend’s TOD10N with the traditional knots at the bottoms. It’s not hard once you get clear instructions, though it takes a little more time and patience. You can also buy ball ended nylon strings from a few companies, but some bridges will not accommodate them if they have open slots on the bottom end. You can also get these square beads that make restrings a piece of cake, but you’ll also need a standard style classical bridge without the open-ended slots. I actually was proud of myself when I got through that traditional restring . . . but I haven’t done it since, lol. ????????????
Nice. Of course the video from Kennedy violins better shows what the guitar sounds like and explains the features. But a bone nut and saddle, dual acton truss rod and I think even a high C fret are impressive at this point.
I don't believe I've ever seen or heard a "guitarist" less qualified to demonstrate a classical guitar . . .
Looks similar to the Pyle I scored on Amazon some time ago.
It is also my favorite classical, better than my Epi or Yamaha.
Sounds great. I love the rich tone. I'd play it with a pick and get a cool lanyard like Willie to strap it on. Just do what pleases you and forget all the jealous haters.
If you decide to keep this guitar, just remember…. You can never put steel strings on a nylon string guitar, or they will warp and maybe even snap the neck. That's the usual factory recommendations for nylon strings, not just classical guitars.
Looks good. Sounds good. Nice price, too.
Hey Jayce, that’s a pretty instrument but I’d be lost her!! Thanx!!
