I was using mediums but I actually forgot they were medium until I brought lights and put them on. Yuck they sound so tinny compared to the mediums. Mediums definitely got a better tone.
scale length of guitar would also be a factor, 24 3/4 use heavier set, 25 1/2 use lighter.. for same feel.
You should use whatever gauge you are comfortable with. As long as it won't damage the guitar. I play with extra lights (10s) due to a hand injury, for less tension. If it's a short scale, then I'll use custom lights (11s).

Fingerstyling mediums all day long
I have to disagree slightly.
There are some guitars where lights, custom lights and mediums sound pretty similarly in tone, the mediums are louder and harder to play and custom lights sustain more.
There are some where you want mediums to add headroom or custom lights to play lightly with your fingers.
Then there are some guitars where mediums just straight up sound better and have minimal effect on how hard or soft you need to play for it to sound good.
Im worried to my no truss rod acoustic guitar. What do you prefer a string gauge sir? According to them that 9 or 10 has less tension.
Depends on the guitar. Just do whats best for each guitar.
I use 11s on electric but I think I have 12s or 13s on my acoustic it’s been a while since I’ve tinkered with the strings ????
Medium, tuned down 1/2 step.
Light gauge on 12 string ..i did NOT consult you tube for that , and i tune below standard pitch

The first choice should be whatever the guitar was designed for. Never go heavier than the recommended gauge unless you will be tuning down or in certain open/ alternate tunings
