In this episode of the BION Sounds, we dig deeper into one of the most amazing sound combinations in Rock’n Roll history and the tone that captivated generations: a 1960’s Gibson Trini Lopez going straight into a 1990’s or 2000’s Fender Tone Master 100W amp head.
Different than most people believe, the main sound of Dave Grohl is not a Vox AC30 nor a Mesa Boogie Dual Rectifier and we are here trying to prove that point.
Join us as we play some different Foo Fighters songs while messing around with the volume knob of both an original Gibson Trini Lopez and Dave’s Epiphone DG335, trying to achieve Dave’s famous sound.

According to the User Manual for the 90's Tonemaster, the 2×12 cab cam with Celestian Vintage 30s. Did you change the speakers in your cab to greenbacks?
that's awesome! I always use a capture of a mesa dual rect for the foo fighters but will try for sure a capture of the tone master in the nano cortex

To be honest, this fender amp sounds really close to the Vox AC 30 C2 with greenbacks that I have. Still that fender tone master looks great.

how the hell you get this beautiful sound, I got magnatone varsity reverb, plugged via ox box to my focusrite and the sound is just awful… great video btw 😉

First two records were done with Dave’s white Les paul. First record the amp was Marshall jmp being hit with a boost pedal (forgot which, you can find them anymore) that had a high and low pass. Second record (tcas) most of the heavy tones are a mesa boogie dual rectifier 2 channel on the orange channel. They even used pat’s power amp goofy rig on tcats along with the fender. To clarify listen to something like wind up, that’s clearly a mesa boogie dr. Yes the fender etc where used in the record, but you are missing the top end “sizzle” that very clear to hear once all the guitars come in on everlong. That sizzle is from the dual rectifer.

I love how, as time as gone on, Dave has tried to ret-con what he has used. He forgets that he did guitar magazine interviews over those years. The s/t debut was a LP through a JCM800, The Colour and the Shape is actually a combination of the Gibson RD and Trini through the Tone Master and a Rectifier
