  • Hi Fabian nice review as usual. Having two acoustic wondering if this MCM 114 isn't a great solution… was hesitating with a KM184 but a seller explain me you need specific analogic preamp for having a great sound. Tis MCM is versatile you can play with on stage and record .. does the microphone not bother the play ?

  • I own 4 of these including a variety of clips and attachments for all sorts of instruments, working in a theatre covering anything from pit orchestras, covers/tribute bands, musical theatre, ambient music and more. People are stunned when I suggest using one (or more) of the 114’s (on pretty much any acoustic instrument), be it the tone that’s achieved, or gain before feedback, depth and clarity of these microphones. I love them.

  • Small question. MCM 114 vs Austrian Audio CC8 for studio acoustic guitar recording what do you think? CC8 is great for stereo but no for live performances. MCM is not stereo but great for gigs… I also have K&K Trinity Pro MIni and thinking about blending between MCM and K&K to get kind of stereo sound… Hmmm? 🙂

  • Wonderful review! I really appreciated the back and forth demo between the two mics. I agree, they really do sound astonishingly similar. To my ears, the larger KM 184 made the guitar sound fuller and bigger. Gorgeous! But the tiny MCM 114 was not far behind at all! While I do like the bigger sound, I am grateful to you for pointing out the many benefits in terms of easier setup and less stuff to carry to gigs with the tiny MCM114. Excellent point, & that might be the thing that cinches the deal.

    I wish I could have heard both of these mics with a classical guitar. As many of us know, they are notoriously finicky and hard to Mic to get a natural sound. I don't have or want any electronics in my two classical guitars, so this is always a problem. After doing a ton of research & discarding a bunch of under-saddle piezo & internal mics in my 2 nylon string crossover guitars, I finally found the LR Baggs Lyric internal mic (nylon version) that is attached to the underside of the soundboard. They have made my ears happy for over 10 years now, but now I'd love to try the MCM 114 on my classical guitars. Actually, I'd love to try both of the mics you demoed here with these guitars, but I have a feeling that would be far out of my budget these days….

  • I recieved my Mcm 114 today and the sound is awesome, but i have to push the gain on my interface (scarlett 2i2, mixer A&H Zed10FX) very hard, just below maximum to get this mic to a decent volumen.. is that normal? Position is clearly a factor but i put it directly above the guitar between 12th fret and soundhole..
    any recommandations?
    Thinkin about buying the ebs stanley clark as my go to preamp live as interface to my pedalboard.
    Also this mic just produces all the sounds u make.. so my guitar strap while i am standing makes a little noise when i'm movin around you definitely hear that through the speakers, but the sound otherwise of the guitar with a touch of EQ is brilliant. Just brilliant

  • Just scanned Youtube to see if the Xvive U8 wireless would be something to have for convenience when recording at home. All the videos sounded a little muddy. None sounded as good as this one with MCM114. Anyways I will just keep using my KM184. Excellent playing BTW.

  • I dumped piezo pickups years ago and use K&K Pure Mini internal transducer and LR Baggs M80 (not M1) magnetic/transducer soundhole pickups. Both are vastly more natural-sounding than piezo under-saddle pickups.

    Depending on price, I might give this Neumann a try.

  • Nice Lowden, you play… 🙂 It reminds me a lot to mine (a 1987 S10C model, which today is the O-model with mahagony and cedar top, but in my case with a cutaway). I play this guitar since about 35 years now. It looks a lot like you have basically the exact same model… 🙂

    I really like the design and flexibility of the MCM, but there is one thing I am still waiting for:
    Being also a fiddle player (and using a dpa all the time) I would love to use one of these small mics in combination with a leightweight transmitter (not a beltpack!!), so that mic + transmitter could be attatched to leightweight acoustic instruments e.g. fiddles, mandolins etc… As I am switching between different instruments all the time on stage, having a cable between fiddle and your belt is extremely dangerous (I learned it the hard way…)…
    By far the best solution would be one of these small transmitters, that usually come with jack-plugs and are used for electric guitars etc. Unfortunately, these transmitters do NOT supply Tonaderspeisung (don't know the english word, sorry…), so they cannot power the impedance converter inside such active electret capsules like the dpa or MCM… So, a leigtweight (!!!) transmitter that offers power supply for the mic in combination with a short lead would be an absolutely game-changer for A LOT of fiddle / mandolin players like me…

  • Especially thanks for video'ing from the 8:00 mark onward, where you use different positionings and different instruments. On dobro-slides, can you put your hand between the strings and mic, discover the mic is too low, and push it upward for more hand-clearance? I'm sure that can 'make noise' from the bump, but if I was careful and instead of pushing the mic upward with the back of my hand, could you use your picking-hand to grab the goose-neck and lift it away for an extra 2-3cm of clearance without creating mic-noise? Or will any mic-adjustment create some noise, brief as it may be?

  • Unsurprisingly, it's a very nice microphone. But please be aware that it won't fix the fundamental shortcoming of all mics in live situations. The acoustic guitar is a pretty quiet instrument, so you will have to push the gain high to get a healthy signal, causing all the feedback problems that make people reach for those awful piezo pickups. At 800 bucks, plus another 100 for that clip to attach it to the guitar's body (no, that's NOT included, as I learned the hard way!), you're spending a lot of money for something most gigging musicians could achieve with a humble dynamic mic on a stand. If you're in the luxurious position of playing with HiFi sound on a super quiet stage in front of an attentive, quiet audience, this is worth looking into.
