John Cougar Close Enough on HQ Vinyl with Lyrics in Description

Track 8 from his fifth album “American Fool” released in 1982 copyright Riva Records. It was recorded at Cherokee Studios in Hollywood and Criteria Studios in Miami and was produced by John Mellencamp & Don Gehman who was also one of the three engineers who worked on the project. It was his breakthrough release and reached No. 1 on the Billboard album chart where it stayed for nine weeks. Riva Records monitored the recording sessions and didn’t see much potential in the songs chosen for the album so they put a hold on the sessions and considered hiring a new producer or even firing John from the label. Eventually they were convinced to let the project go ahead but hoped for a different musical direction on future albums. Three singles were released. “Hurts So Good” reached No. 2 on the chart and has become one of his most popular songs. “Jack & Diane” spent four weeks at No. 1 and was selected by the Recording Industry Association of America as one of the “Songs of the Century.” Mick Ronson, who worked as a guest musician and arranger on the album, was instrumental in coming up with the final arrangement for the song. The album received above average reviews and reached No. 37 in the U.K., No. 30 in Sweden, No. 18 in Australia and No. 1 in the U.S. and Canada. It was certified 5X Platinum in the U.S. and Canada. I may not be a pillar in my town
Or have the kinda job you think that I should
I know you see me out runnin’ around
With a couple of people you think are no good

I’ve tried to clean it up a couple of times but I’m a
Backslidin’ fool when it comes to walkin’ that line
It’s OK, you think you’re better than me
Yeah, that’s alright, girl, that’s alright ’cause I’m

(Close enough for rock and roll)
(Close enough for rock and roll)
(Close enough for rock and roll)
I’m close enough for a little rock and roll, roll, yeah

Yeah, it’s true, I don’t plan my time
When you’re lookin’ for me I’m hard to find
I know you don’t wanna run around with me
With my socks fallin’ down, girl, I’m just poor company

I seen your face, and it’s a one-eyed Jack
We like to talk about this or that
None of these things really interest me
Hey, that’s alright, girl, that’s alright ’cause I’m

(Close enough for rock and roll)
(Close enough for rock and roll)
(Close enough for rock and roll)
I’m close enough for a little rock

I know you think I’m a rough-cut, baby, yeah
I ain’t as rough-cut as I am the blood on your hands
(Gonna love that blood right offa your hands) uh

(Close enough for rock and roll)
(Close enough for rock and roll)
(Close enough for rock and roll)
(Close enough for rock and roll)
(Close enough for rock and roll)
(Close enough for rock and roll)
(Close enough for rock and roll)
(Close enough) for rock and roll
Yeah, yeah
