Orange Acoustic DI is better than the LR Baggs Para DI and Fishman for a less money. I find that Fishman Preamps add a unique flavour to the sound, like they have their own opaque sound.
The Grace Design Alix is unmatched. Sounds so 3D!
Just got the radial PZ Pre. smokes the fishman aura and Baggs Venue i have. i’m using one guitar with an Anthem in it and the other with an M-80 pickup. have you tried the Radial stuff that’s actually comparable to everything else in your review? so much more solid build than any of the ones reviewed here, in my experience.
The Sonic Research tuner you recommend is out of production. The full-size version is stated to be back on the market as of March, 2026. And about the Fishman: I have one and love it, though I am puzzled about one thing: The Effects Send sounds fantastic as a way of feeding my pedalboard (which ends with a DI of its own), and the DI (XLR) signal also sounds great, but the To Amp output sounds a big muddy and lackluster by comparison. I wonder why…
I’ve got the Fishman Platinum Pro EQ on my pedalboard, and I have to say — at first, I was really disappointed. The manual says the input LED should blink only occasionally when you’re strumming hard, but when I followed that, the EQ (Bass, Mid, Treble, Brilliance) barely reacted, and the compressor didn’t do much until around 3 o’clock.
So I experimented. I set my guitar’s piezo volume to about 50%, tone around 50% (not too harsh, not too dark), and then boosted the input gain on the pedal until the input LED blinked occasionally even with medium picking — always green, never yellow or red.
That made a huge difference. The sound came alive, the EQ knobs actually worked as they should, and the compressor finally responded properly. I was even thinking of selling the pedal before, but now that I’ve figured this out, it’s definitely a keeper. With the built-in tuner and adjustable boost, this pedal is just awesome.
Hi there! What preamp/DI would you recommend to get a fuller sound in a live front-of-house mix? I have Maton guitar with AP5 Pro.
This was a great video! There is not enough talk about live acoustic tone! How would you rate the Avalon U5 up against the Alix? Also, do you use a reverb pedal live for acoustic? Thank you and continue to make videos! Subscribed.
you're offering a wealth of thoughtful information on "good gear" the website is a wonderful resource. your voice on the other hand is the equivalent of a proco rat LOL. thanks for your efforts!
Any love on Radial Tonebone PZ pre and pair it with KK preamp?
How is the Grace Bix? Seems like less expensive version without mids. I have a sansamp para di, fishman aura spectrum and trying out a buddies venue to see if i want one. I am going into a loudbox and really cant tell much a difference with them. I have a k & k in my hd28 and just put a lr baggs anthem sl in a d15.
My new idea is to use my jackson audio bloom which is a compressor, boost and studio EQ. It reall6 warm them up. I put a boss Tu2 in front since it matches the K& k impedance. Id like to try the lr baggs voice print.
Do you go from the di xlr out to pa or fishman loudbox? Im wondering if a preamp in front of the fishman is too many preamp? Any thoughts on that?
Thank you for the reviews.
