Have a new one arriving today! It has the Atmosfeel system. FG9R NX. All of the way from Japan with tariffs. Ouch!
Been a collector & player for 60 years. This was a 2026 NAMM favorite. Good for Yamaha using Elixir strings. Royalty is ???? accurate. Love this review.

Thank you for this review. I bought an FG9-R last Saturday and your review, and several others, forced me to play this guitar.
I bought an FG9-R today. I compared to five Martins, which ascended in price. It wasn’t until I got deep into the Martin Custom Shop offerings before I could find a guitar which matched the FG9 in tone and materials…the craftsmanship was never equaled. I purchased the FG9 for 40% of that price of the Martin.
It's a beauty! And the sound is killer!
Seriously one of the greatest guitar makers in the world. Proud owner of a LS36 and FS9R. Many people are floored when they play these. They must have some recollection of a FS/FG800 that they strummed in the past.
I preordered the FG9 60th anniversary guitar. Should be here end of March.

After seeing you play at Harrison Hot Springs last evening, January 2026 I am included in the long list of those who are/were curious about your Yamaha. Absolutely loved your show by the way. My curiosity comes from the fact that my mom bought me my first real quality guitar when I was twelve and it was a Yamaha FG160. That was in 1972 and I still have it. I was taken by this beauty that you were playing and noticed the headstock shape from the middle of the room and told my wife “That looks like a Yamaha”. Mine still sounds amazing. Yours, in your more than capable hands sounded fantastic. Thanks for a great show and this video.
I tried a FG9 mahogany and indeed it was superb. I didn't keep it however. Did order a TAG3c when it was released. It shocked me that the TAG3c was 90% of the sound and playability of the FG9 but better yet with the new generation trans acoustic goodies which are intoxicating. I would highly recommend anyone give it a try and see how amazing it is.
I’m into watches and this thing reminds me a lot of Grand Seiko in its identity as a product and design philosophy. You see the Seiko or Yahama Brand and your initial impression is that it’s some run of the mill $300-400 thing. Then you learn it’s actually $5000+ and you wonder how in the hell a Sieko or Yahama could be possibly worth 10x what everything else they build costs. Then you look at it closely and discover the quality and attention to detail in its design and realize it should actually cost more like $10,000 since it easily stacks up to other watches/guitars 2-3x the price. And if Yahama and Grand Seiko had the same brand cache as Martin or Rolex it absolutely would cost that much.

I watched this video a month or 2 ago. As a result I placed and order for the FG9-RX. I received it last week. I have not been able to put it down. Thank you JP for brining this to my attention.
im sure its very nice but … a old Martin D35 should be as good .. maybe not the news ones .. but a old Martin ???? not sure if the Yamaha beats it ..
Would love one but the temp/humidity levels in my home vary terribly throughout the seasons.
