Guillermo mentioned lol! here's what I can say: Andre is an amazing Teacher! not only he knows all about music theory oriented to the guitar, he actually knows how to teach music and guitar technique, the way he explain things makes concepts click instantly. I think my progress has skyrocketed since I joined clarity guitar studio. people are missing out!!
Also I'm new to this ergonomic guitar concept and having Andre's input is very valuable to me as i'm also in this back pain journey lol, looking forward to watch this series Andre!
What is that stand? Thanks
Thank you so much for your analysis of posture. I am having wrist problem (neural problem) waiting for your next post????
I've been interested in ergonomics in just about everything since joining the 30's club. Recently coming back to guitar… well I'm getting shoulder surgery in short. I am only able to play with a back garter to make me sit straight and using a strap to mimick sitting down position while standing. Unfortunately classical doesn't work for me because it's not comfortable to keep my right hand in front of my belly. But planting it on my Strats curves so I mimick keeping my arms to the side of my body works very well. Listen to your body guys.
Who makes the guitar stand you talk ablut at 10:13 in your video?
Thanks
I would also like to know the name of that guitar stand at the end if anyone knows. I remember seeing old footage of Pat Metheny use something like that for Phase Dance, not sure why more people don't use such stands on a stage setting more often.
If you can't play guitar in a seated position without back or wrist pain you've got bigger problems. Get a little more comfortable being uncomfortable
My shameless prediction: in 2070, the most sold guitar designs will be 99% Stratocaster, Tele or LP (or derivative)
I got an electric guitarlele recently, and resting its tail end on my leg and up at an angle is similar to what the strandberg is doin’.
So I’m getting an essential 6 soon… because I love playing like that, plus my back and shoulder would feel better with a couple fewer lbs.
These style of guitars are nothing new, and many players still like to play old school guitars and you can play everything on them then as now. Many players don’t play jazz or some sort of fusion style. With the instrument crammed up under the chin. Many players play standing up and lower, And make a living doing it.
how about propping the guitar by unhooking the bridge end of the strap and sitting on it to keep the neck pulled up?
Hi, very interesting approach of the subject. Can you point out the brand of the guitar stand that sit on that microphone "like" stand. I can't find it on the internet although i post some capture on google image search. Thanks
Sorry to be nitpicky but a Mayones hydra is not just a strat without a head. They're both S shapes and the 6 string has the same scale length as a strat, that's about the extent of the comparison. Probably hard to get into every detail in a YT video of reasonable length but if you're looking for a headless strat this is not one lol.
I am a closet player. One of many who went out and bought a guitar when the Beetles came out. My brain and fingers just don't connect correctly so I will never be a "musician"…. I never could play with the guitar on my lap, and my neck crept up to about that 45 degree level, some times a bit higher. It just "feels" better. Ergonomics is important to me since I have been an athlete for most of my 75 years. Maybe if I had the time to put in 8 to 10 hours a day playing, I might have developed those mental pathways so my brain and fingers would connect properly….
I recently got on the ergonomic thing. I bought the Solar Guitars headless because it understands that just cutting of the head doesn't do anything. It's a bit of a strandberg clone with some traditional esthetic touches. I might be one of the few people who will say I love the way headless guitars look for the most part. I hate the ibanez headless vibe. Like you said, just a super strat with the head cut off.
Strandberg are not optimum for a man like me with a 9” span. The neck is an absolute nightmare for me
I wish you would review the HILS HNT-1 and HNS-1 and let us know the pros and cons of each.
Super, super, super! I'll be watching every episode! And yes, I have subscribed!!
I’ve been thinking about how the fretboard-to-body angle for cello, stand-up acoustic bass, and Chapman Sick are even more upright. Also, classical guitarist Paul Galbraith has developed a unique ergonomic style wherein he holds his instrument far more vertically than most other classical guitarists. Personally – since I am not blessed with long spidery fingers, I tend to struggle with left-hand wrist and finger issues – and I notice how it all improves the more vertically I hold the fretboard. I’m old and just a solitary duffer, so I feel free to experiment (for fun) with posture, ergonomics, string tuning, etc, in any goofy way I want to. Right now I’m having so much fun experimenting with ‘tritone’ tuning (aka ‘augmented 4ths’, ‘diminished 5ths’, ‘flat 5’). Also, I’m figuring out how to attach a cello-like pin (similar to Galbraith) so I can play while standing like an acoustic bass player, free up my legs and body to sway and step rhythmically, and maneuver the fretboard to whatever (vertical) angle feels most ergonomic at the moment.
My Ibenez SEW761MCW despite its cumbersome name is super comfortable and lightweight.
Most instruments shape are not ergonomic at all. At least the guitar is isomorphic. The piano needs you to learn a different shape for each key. You might think it is not ergonomics, but I think it is very much closely related. Instruments shape and form is influenced by tradition and habits, and therefore, there is a strong inertia and resistance going on.
I played classical guitar for 30 years, and decided to get into electric, but I hate how holding the guitar horizontal handicaps my left hand. I'm thinking of building an electric guitar that sits at just the right angle and balances right, and has a wider nut.
Excited for ergonomics 😀
Andre, try a B.C. Rich. I know it seems counter intuitive because of the sharp points, but body styles like the warlock or a beast make that angle you are talking about very easy by tucking the bottom body horn under your leg. Just saying, give it a try. I was surprised when I started playing them.
I watched the whole video waiting for you to debut your new guitar line.
I was thoroughly disappointed.
I feel like you missed the opportunity to give Steve Klein the credit he deserves.. unless I'm mistaken, he created the first "ready position" electric guitar. If we're not going to throw money at him for creating such a unique design, you could at least give credit to Steve and then later Lorenzo who purchased the electric division of Klein guitars some serious acknowledgment.
???? The electric magnetic guitar is way past time for an ergonomic design revolution. So very tired of the same designs????
That guitar stand that looks like a big Performax makes me both happy to see, and somewhat sad that someone took Guitar Scientists idea and made it slightly better.
Lately, I've been contemplating the guitar strap as something that could benefit from a significant about of thoughtful re-design to achieve a better human to guitar interface. Even the really great ergonomic straps and custom straps are at best a sloppy interface slung over the back with something just slightly evolved over a rope. I rather suspect that theres a better solution, probably ugly like the headless guitars….but if you havent loved something ugly for how awesome it works then you just havent lived (or lived long enough).
Although I’ve always been interested in alternative design, almost to a fault, I’ve never had access to a lot of it. Had a Parker budget fly then I wish I’d have held onto one time. These days for sitting at the DAW or laptop I use a short scale S type guitar on my left leg with my left foot up on a stool and it works absolutely perfectly for lots of hours in that position.
3 Johns. Sounds like what happens after bad Taco Bell as well…
