3 COOL Hacks for Getting the Pedal Steel Sound on Guitar

The Pedal Steel is such a beautiful sound so in this video I show you 3 tips for getting the Pedal Steel sound on guitar.

This lesson is all around bending the notes on the guitar to create chord tones using Triads. It’s a really easy hack and it creates a really cool sound. This works great for country music but it’s usable in any song in a major key and can be used on any major chord.

Here are some time stamps:
0:00 – Intro
0:24 – Listen to Duke Levine
1:22 – Triads
1:46 – Technique 1
4:16 – Technique 2
5:32 – Technique 3
6:42 – Outro

The key to nailing the pedal steel sound on the guitar is to make sure your bends are quick and accurate as this mimics the functionality of the pedals on a Pedal Steel. It also works best using a clean tone. In this video i’m using my Fender Blues Junior and the Wampler Tumnus for a clean boost. It adds some nice compression but if you have a compressor pedal the tone will be even more authentic.

For inspiration of how to incorporate this approach in a musical context be sure to listen to Duke Levine’s album, ‘The Fade Out’:

I also referenced Music Emporium’s video of Duke’s playing in isolation. You can watch the full video here:

  • Great lesson but please get a better camera angle on that left hand close up. Hard to see what you're doing

  • You might point the camera directly at your frets for us noobs, but thanks for the lesson.

  • Good explanations, but not a great camera angle for seeing your finger positions on the fretboard.

  • Hey dude, turn your guitar to the camera. It’s difficult to see what you’re doing in conjunction with your description. However, I like the lesson and look forward to it

  • good tips but the view of the fretboard is not good, can't see what you're doing, too angled

  • Great video mate! Technique is very important but equally important is the tone. What reverb pedal along with the type of reverb are you using and amp to get that beautiful sound?

  • What about open tunings and slides? Those are key in the pedal steel sound. Maybe if people want to sound like a pedal steel without investing in the whole kit, they should look into lap steel. Richard Thompson does a passable impression of a pedal steel on his cover of Hank Williams's "Why Don't You Love Me?" using a Strat I think, but generally country lead guitar and pedal steel don't sound like each other.

  • question: Ernie ball sells 10 string steel pedal strings. afaik the scale is not so different (24 inches), would those strings fit a "normal guitar" (choosing either the top 6 or any combination?) the gauges go from 10 to 38 ???? i am just wondering

  • Great lesson Chris. The sound you’re getting immediately makes me think of Randy Travis! Great stuff…and yes, country is awesome! Brad Paisley is one of my all time favs ????
