Adult Guitar Lessons: Beginner Guitar Lessons. When you first begin playing guitar the ends your fingertips are soft so the pressure of holding the strings down can hurt like crazy.
The soreness will last until your fingertips toughen up and form calluses (hard skin on your finger tip ends) that will help protect them against the pressing of the strings.
Unfortunately, this is a two-fold problem. Not only can it be annoying and certainly uncomfortable to play guitar with sore fingers, it will also stop or slow you down from playing guitar as much as you want to.
I don’t think it’s worth going through this finger soreness and annoying stage at all, when you can reduce or even prevent your fingers from getting sore from happening… which you can.
Tips on What To Do About It.
Here are my top three (guitar hacks) or tips to help you and your fingertips out to avoid the soreness:
Use A Guitar Capo.
A guitar capo is a small device that clamps on your guitar neck that lets you easily play in different keys.
A handy extra bonus of using a capo is that it presses the strings down closer to the fretboard, which means you can use much less pressure to hold them down which in turn will reduces the initial finger soreness to you fingertips.
I highly recommend that you clamp it on the second or forth fret and you’re good to go.
Let the Calluses Form.
You want to have protective calluses to form on your fingertips as fast as possible.
Which will involve playing for a long enough period of time to trigger them forming, but stopping before your fingers get too sore and hinder them developing.
Remember: The callouses actually form while you’re not playing the guitar, so aim to stimulate them, then get out of their way and let the magic happen.
For speedy callouses to take shape: play for short enjoyable bursts each day (10-15 minutes is fine in most cases).
Don’t over do it and any time that you experience a lot of finger soreness, stop for a break to relieve the pain and let your calluses form quicker.
Don’t Over Grip Your Guitar Neck.
Many beginner guitar players often instinctively grip the guitar neck frets too tightly and use more pressure than they need, which makes for sore fingertips for sure.
Instead try this little guitar exercise to find the optimum pressure you need to apply.
Press down and play a note anywhere on the guitar neck as you normally would.
Select a number between 1 and 10 for how much pressure you’re using for that particular note.
Stay on the same fret but move your finger
tip closer to the fret that is closest to you finger tip.
Keep picking that note and begin reducing the pressure slowly until you’re using as little pressure as possible but still getting a clear tone on the note.
Then give this new pressure a number between 1 and 10.
You will want to do this as many times as you need to in order to fix this new habit and along with playing in the optimum position (close to the fret) aim to use this reduced (optimum) amount of pressure whenever you play guitar : )
