  • How about the use of a metronome to practice? What do you think os the minimal practice each day to have success learning guitar?

  • You probably here this all the time, but as a person you inspire me beyond, watching your videos and picking up the guitar brought me through the loss of my children, the thought of not wanting to go on, nights sat alone with alcohol and drugs if you don’t know how special you are as a person and how much you inspire others then I hope you do now Matt you are an incredible person and have helped me beyond belief. So thank you for your time and your efforts.

  • Very clear explanations and that Taylor sounds beautiful! Thinking of strumming in terms of timing rather than D/U patterns is a good way of approaching learning the guitar and it makes it so much more like creating music too which is what it's all about. A capo can be a godsend for the hand alright and really opens so many possibilities for those who only know a handful of chords. Forgive the plug but I've just made my own spin on the same theme in this video: https://youtu.be/7gWs20EC4WI. Thought I'd share it for the community of beginners out there – it's very different to your take on what you wish you were taught as a beginner and feel it complements this video nicely! Thanks so much for the inspiring lesson ????

  • This is awesome what you are doing. Thank you for showing me the alternate c for now it makes it a lot easier for a beginner. I'm glad I found you on Youtube. I love how you talk about God also.

  • Lol that's cheating because you're still not playing the proper C Major ????????????. That's C something else. ????

  • Thank you for that information I am new at this and was having the same problem. I have been trying to learn reckless love and couldn't seem to do it because of that. I have also been wanting to learn piano. At one time I was getting piano lessons but then I quite. I still want to play and don't know anything but A-G on piano.

  • I knew that chord substitution, and discard it in most cases. It is really not that useful when learning how to play at the basic level. The C major chord is somewhat of a right of passage as far as rhythm guitar playing goes. It is, after all, the most basic chord shape that stretches across three frets.
Strumming while thinking down, up, down, up might seem a bit mechanical, but it is not supposed to be the end result. It is a clear and concise way to convey the rhythm of a song, with the down-strum signifying an on-beat note and the up-strum signifying an off-beat note.
I could characterize the intro of Peaceful Easy Feeling by the Eagles as a D D DUDU, DUDU U U pattern, and the regular strumming pattern for the song as D DUDUDU. That tells me the timing of the rhythm in each measure. It is not something to focus on once you already have the song down, it is a learning tool and nothing more.

  • And I'll stand with arms wide and heart abandoned
In awe of the one who gave it all
I'll stand, my soul Lord to you surrendered
    All I am is yours

    I just love that song.

  • The first two “tips” are pretty poor advice. If anything, learn how to play the G chord with your middle, ring & pinky so you can play Gsus2, Gsus4, G7 chords and transition between G & C seamlessly. And the strumming tip is terrible. Learn strum patterns. His tip is good if you only play 4/4 and want all your songs to sound the same.
