  • Nope… A 30" shortscale 6-string bass is very useful because you can tune it exactly like a guitar, only one octave down…which makes it indespensible for creating bass lines for songs created on your guitar without having to change your thinking to match it up to a standard bass tuning… For some reason, bass players look at as blasphemy when it works like a charm for guitar players… ????

  • Bro, you forgot to mention how 6's aren't forgiving when it comes to slapping…I find it hard af to do on mine like I would say a 4 or 5

  • So, basically, the 6 strings suck because bassists are lazy? The neck being so wide is a valid reason that you didnt mention

  • Just got my first real 6-string (pun intended) and the points are very true.

#1. I already used floating thumb so the muting wasn't terrible but you truly can't slack here the way you can on a 4-string.

#2. The whiffing / noodling is real. "OK, let's learn this thing". 5 minutes later: "Hehe, chords go bing"

#3. The more info is real as well. I felt like I knew the neck on a 5-string decently well, and since both 4 and 5 string basses have the same high end only the low B is different, it was fairly easy to transition between 4 and 5. However, a 6-string (if tuned in standard and not to low F#) gives you an extra high string as well, that really threw a wrench into my understanding of the neck and had me go "hold on, where am I?".

  • A 6 string allows a 4 string person to play more vertically without having to play horizontally up and down all the time to get that range.

  • Rich Brown has an excellent channel and one of his videos has turned a light bulb on for me, check it out and you'll see. I've had a six string for about 12 months and only now that light bulb has come on for me after seeing that video, really opened up the full value of this bloody big neck and I'm loving playing the 6 string now.

  • my first impression is the size of that neck and the strings been far appart would be an issue for me, nice paint job.

  • Thank you for this wonderful lesson! I (try to) play a 6 string and stopped making progress a while back. I have been thinking about consulting an expert and after watching your video I understand why I am not enjoying the 6, it's because I'm playing it like a 4! Thank you!!!

  • 11/19/2023 I'm rewatching this video (again lol). This video and the Anthony Jackson video inspired me to try a sixer. I've been playing 6 string exclusively for about 2 years now and am thoroughly enjoying it! I have gotten good at the right hand thumb muting

  • Because you don't know how to play and they don't give you the hands to do it. Maybe you should get a 1 string bass.

  • Scott, I just acquired a 7 string bass from all in one guitars, I do own 4,5,6,and now 7 string with a f# low string. I'm enjoying it. I'm finding that I have to focus on where I use the f# string to create an effect depending on the type of song, I play gospel music and the low f# comes off like a b52 bomber, the weight of this bass, 12.5 -13 lbs is a challenge, but I like the weight, I've been playing for 45+years and with this seven string I'm up for it. I could stand to have about another inch of finger added to my existing hand size.

  • I would add some points to the reasons list. Some time ago I got my first bass and it's 6 string bass. I had some background in music in my past so I thought my decision is rational.

But I didn't know I would face the problems I faced:

    1) The choice of strings. It was a quite surprise for me that I just can't by a one single strings set for my bass. There are just no manufacturers thats make strings sets for my bass if I want to follow original gauges. So to get new strings I need to by two sets and combine them that makes strings replacement price two times higher. Also I'm very limited in manufacturers choice. And I'm extremely limited in types of strings – I would like to experiment with different types of strings but looks like it's not an option with my 6 string bass. I wouldn't face that issue with 4 string bass. And I definitely have never had problems with buying strings for my guitars.

    2) Almost all the songs, all the lessons are made for 4 string bass. And if purpose of low B is a bit more clear, the purpose of high C is still mysterious for me. It's cool to have it, but I just do not know how to use it. I understand that's my only personal problem just wanted to share.

  • One thing that is a dealbreaker for me is the size and apparent weight. It really is meant to be played sitting comfortably, making you the grandad of your band in your comfy chair.

  • nice:) im getting a 6 string bass now. good thing im using that thumb technique…started using that a couple of years ago, and now its floating like a dream. Easier to adapt to a 6 string:)
