In this video, I am going to show you how to take 3 easy phrases and make some really great jazz licks. The video will also help you understand and hear what makes something an interesting or boring bebop lick. You have probably already been struck with the curse of the Bad Bop licks with all the right notes and arpeggios and still sound really boring. This video will help you improve that, give you some powerful tools, and help you develop your melodic ear in general.

Some of it is how to play jazz guitar, but other videos are more on Music Theory like Jazz Chords or advice on how to practice and learn Jazz, on guitar or any other instrument.
The videos are mostly jazz guitar lessons, but also music theory, analysis of songs and videos on jazz guitars.

Do you work on Bebop, or is it not relevant to what you want to play?
If you are in doubt then look here: This Is Why You Should Study Bebop

very helpful video and set of "tricks"!
as the barry harris 5432 patterns are a similar thing, i would love to see a video about this technique. what they are, how to use, how to variate, how to adapt them to other scales (melodic minor?) etc… there are videos available about this but not made with your expertise as a teacher and quality of production of your videos.
exactly what my playing needed
Just the inspiration and lesson I needed at the right time, thx a lot!
Waw, this is the kind of lesson i could use right now. Seems a good introduction to bebop as well as the core of jazz lines without having to study all the bebop scales, yet be able to get a taste of it. I experienced problems with trying to get away from playing too much on the downbeat which indeed makes it way too predictable. But i didn't find a way out just by skipping beats. I think the enclosures are really important.
"Young players are trying to find music from scales. I am trying to find scales for my music."
An applicable quote by Barney Kessell. I remember it from an old DownBeat magazine interview from the 70s.
Great material Mr. Larsen, thank you very much
Hey Jens, I'm looking to buy my first electric guitar! (~$1000 budget) Do you have any recommendations or videos on that?
as usual nice lesson, I m so back with your lessons to follow that probably I would need 2 months full time to recover all the missing time
Nice robot animation – my new best Jazz teacher.
I agree with Metheny on a point he made during an interview where he mentions the importance for players to absorb or at least touch on the bebop language as a foundation to unlock your fullest potential in order to gain a more complete understanding of the music we make today and also allowing access to essential tools which can help expand your development for creating new music in the future.
Excellent Lesson ! Thanks again ????????
First Corona virus pandemic and now "the curse of the bad bop lick" to worry about!….when will it end!
This guy is a dick he leaves yhe tab up for maybr 2 seconds. Sometimes hd takes it down so fast that i only got maybe to notes read. Then if ypu hit pause the tab is blocked to where you can't read the tab. What a ???? this guy is
OK I made some great jazz licks in my own estimate, this ought to surprise their ears i thot as I went to play. Through the din of plates and silverware and conversation a family in a booth with their backs turned eating Chicken Flied Lice took time out to say "Dad pass the soy sauce!"
"Maybe a career in more avantgarde music is not to late"? You can always do it as a side gig!
Ik was het aan het spelen en je kunt er ook ''the godfather'' spelen in hetzelfde straatje, toonsoort
Ur lessons are like diamonds in a gold mine..free for all
Yoyoyo sup bruh (: (: (:
Het nummer ''Opnieuw beginnen'' van Youp van t hek is echt nice arpeggios in de piano doe nu op gitaar allemaal drieklankies zie spotify – prachtige paprika's van hem
Im curious if you are aware of Jerry Garcia? He was terribly inconsistent, but at his best, he was one of the great melodic/chromatic improvisers and is often overlooked by jazz players. People like Bela Fleck and Branford Marsalis rate him as "the greatest musician ever to touch an instrument," to quote Bela Fleck.
Love your stuff. Very tasty player and very thoughtful. Thanks for sharing man!
Heb een arrangement van Youp van t hek – Prachtige paprika's gemaakt de melodie en bas is wel lastig heb nu kromme nek
Simply the best jazz guitar lessons! I've absolutely no excuses left for being crap.
I just want to say THANK YOU Jens!!!!…Your lessons excite me After 30 Years of playing! We appreciate your hard work!
One chord – great. I'd really love to hear a lesson on 2 chord vamps. Is it a ii-v or a im-iv……..On Broadway by George.
47th Fret – FTW!
Super lesson. Thanks Jens ????
I can get away with a lot more by syncopating the phrase and throwing in accents even if it's just one note to signify the chord. You did that when you "corrected" your phrase from what I observed. Great video Jens.
Wonderful info and playing as always Jens!
The master of these kinds of techniques is Grant Green, rhythmic displacement too.
Hello Jens! So do you apply chromatic enclosures in the same way with the altered scale and altered chord tones? Or do you mix up the unaltered chord tones with enclosures from the altered scale? Etc.
It is amazing, Jens Larsen plays "bad" licks and sounds awesome.
New Camera??
Thank you very much indeed for sharing with us this unbelievable knowledge.
You brought sense to my practice.
