3 YEARS ON The Mosky Golden Horse! – It’s not all good news!

I’ve had the Mosky or Muslady Golden Horse pedal for 3 years and i wanted to see if it still help up as i’ve progressed as a guitar player and the channel has grown since then.

It’s a budget Klon replica in case you didn’t know, it’s a mid boost overdrive than can be used as a clean boost and you can get the Mosky Golden Horse for around $30 or £25 online, it’s not all good news though as i explain in the video.

As an amazon affiliate i receive a small commision if you buy the pedal without it costing you any extra, it helps support what i do.

It’s still a great little guitar overdrive pedal for no money and i’d definitely buy another one!

Thanks for watching – Derek

  • My take: This pedal, along with others of its kind, fulfills a straightforward purpose. Firstly, it's an economical way to explore the characteristics of a Klon. Secondly, it has a smaller footprint on the board compared to some alternatives. Thirdly, it's generally easy to replace. If it appeals to you, then you might consider investing in a more costly, reliable option, knowing that there's an abundance of choices across all price ranges. Conversely, if it's not to your taste, you haven't invested heavily, but you've gained insight into what doesn't work for you. Is it this particular pedal, or do "klones" in general not meet your expectations?

TL;DR: it's an extremely affordable introduction to "Klones," to the extent that if it fails or doesn't match your preferences, you're not at a significant financial loss.

  • You can adjust the EQ to your amp ,pedal, and guitar if you find muddy just tweak the tone knob just simple as that

  • cant really tell your mic pre is quite distorted just turn the mic pre in down and output -3/4 tops then we can hear what trhe distortion is doing

  • The pedal is extremely harsh. I would guess there’s an excess of odd order harmonics. I listened to your comparison vid with the Cieratone, and the Mosky is embarrassing. It assaults my ear. Thanks for saving me $30.

  • Ty for sharing. I've been using the pedal for about 3 years now, and I recently had connections issues with my golden horse lady. That happened about 3 times in a month. It would randomly lose connection during a show and practice, of course. Switched that pedal out.

  • You did not even push the pedal or the amp so this video is really not showing a good example of how this pedal performs. I do see how you are still focusing more of video production rather than becoming a better guitar player !

  • I have a few overdrive pedals including the silver & Golden Horse. I find them a bit thinner sounding when compared to my other overdrives & need to EQ them!

  • Hi Derek. I was thinking of buying this as there's a used one for sale locally but it's more than a brand new one, Ali Express with free shipping is only $18.01. Thanks to your video Ive decided to pass. Thanks for sharing.

  • I use it as a clean boost on my main board, just to add a little top end to a slightly crunch sound. It works great. I ordered two, so I have a back up just in case. ???? I also had a Mosky Silver Horse but probably due to a bad power supply it overheated and there was a terrible smell. Dead!!! I actually ordered two Silver Horses, but the Aliexpress website was a bit confusing, so they sent me the Golde ones. Well, I don't really mind because I wanted one of them anyway, so maybe later I'll get me another Silver Horse again.

  • I have had one on my gigging board since 2021 and sometimes it cuts out after transport. Garbly and low output sound. We had a gig in a nice venue last weekend and soundcheck was pretty stressful dealing with this. I like this sound on my board so I will find a decent alternative.

  • I've got the silver version and I like it but I can't help but think my soul food was better, regrettably I sold it.
For some reason when I play it through my Harley Benton tube 5 it really colours the sound and not in a nice way.
I think I'd try the nux next time. If the jrocker archer was £100 I'd certainly try that.
I don't think id buy the mosky again.

  • Im a gigging musician in the States and this little pedal is fantastic for the price. My advice is, concentrate more on your playing than your tone. 90% of the tone is in your fingers and attitude. Not your gear. I have 4 pedal boards i jam with depending on the situation. All with mixed pedals. JHS, Wampler, Boss, MXR, Behringer, DOD, Vox, DunlopDonner… they all have their place in the chain.

  • Bought the Silver Horse a few months back which has both it's own sound AND the Golden horse as well. They've since fixed the weak circuitry and it sounds as good as the pedals 3-4x it's price. For the money to me it's still got the best tone available AND it's consistently good! It's nice and warm exactly when you need it to be. In the rare chance it ever goes bad? I WILL buy another one!

  • Not many talk about build quality with these budget pedals, which is where companies like Wampler and JHS really shine when it comes to classic circuits. Thanks for revisiting this one ????

  • In fairness there were a batch of these with a particular known component fault. Mine was the same age as yours and died. I hear that's fixed now. Still want another one

  • I tried out the nux horseman pedal.
    $99 in Australia. I like it ????
I have had it almost three years now and it's still in perfect working order.
I have a few nux pedals and I think they are pretty good value for money. I enjoy watching these videos for one reason… Truth.
Always tell the truth, if something is no good tell us, if you make a mistake, tell us. If you are unsure, tell us. Etc etc etc. ????????

  • Hi Derek, I'm pleased to see a follow up report on the Golden Horse, I bought one off the back of your' first review for the princely sum of £10 used and it's become my favourite overdrive pedal at any price range and I like it so much I actually considered taking it to bed with me!. I bought it originally to use it as a booster which is how it's spent most of it's time but I've found it to be a credible low to medium drive pedal in it's own right and if, come the day, that it falls over on me as these mini pedals are expected to, I'll definitely buy another one. I don't know how it compares to a Klon from a tone point of view having never played one but I can't believe that I'm missing out. I may give the Silver Horse a go however as I quite like what I'm hearing from reviews on YT but I somehow doubt it would be any better at what it does than the Gold variant.

Yep, all in all, Mosky hit the mark with this little beauty, I know it's a cliché but there genuinely doesn't seem to be a bad sound in it and if there was one, somebody with my lack of talent would have stumbled over it by now????.

    Cheers Derek.

  • They actually sound better to my ears than a couple of other pricier klon clones – so yeah, spend another $20-30 bucks and you're all set!
