5 Bb Jazz Blues licks – Jazz Guitar Lesson

Blues and Jazz are two genres that share the same roots and have a lot of things in common. You can make some really great lines by mixing things from Blues and Jazz.In this lesson I am going to look at 5 licks that do that and talk a bit about how they are constructed and how you can make lines like that.

The core of this lesson is of course the 5 licks that contain some of the characteristic melodies, phrasing and techniques found in Blues mixed with arpeggios, extensions and chromatic passing notes that you find in Jazz. The result are lines that will fit in both a Jazz and a Blues context, and you can probably put them to use in a lot of jazz standards as well.

  • Very good lesson. Btw; like the tab with this. I do the occasional arpeggio by ear..ie. (broken chord.)
(Bb D F Ab). (1 3 5 b7)..I had forgot that all major chords are major, minor, minor steps .Bb to D..D to F
and F to Ab. was reinforced to me.

  • Jens, thank you for this beautiful lesson. I just came across it today (3 March 2022, 6 years later). But it is timeless and yet timely, as I have immediately incorporated some of the licks into this jazz blues instrumental guitar piece I've been writing.

  • Why should people worry about rules? I mean, it seems that in jazz we outline chord changes. I don't like to outline chords but I love to study standards and I love chords and chord progressions. I like to play whatever I want on those chord progressions. Of course, having studied arpeggios and jazz solos transcriptions, I end up sounding jazzy, in a classical way, but I can't see how outlining chord changes can make your solos better, that is a matter of taste, I like my solos using scales and chromatic notes. Plus jazz is something I like but I am not playing in a jazz band, I don't feel compelled to sound like a famous jazz player. Actually it bothers me to absorb and copy the solos I transcribe, they get stuck in my head and come back all the time. How can I improvise with all these phrases coming up automatically ?

  • Thanks. Why are all the best Jazz (sometimes blues) instructional youtube videos done with a European accent? Ever since me discovering Wes Montgomery youtube vids less than a year ago. Ive gone from wanting to sound like Slipknot to Mr Montgomery(kidding kinda). I cannot for the life of me sound like that cat. I think this vid about nails it, him. Last night I got about halfway through this vid excited and ran to my guitar wanting to experiment with what was shown halfway through. However watching it again now, i am more confused haha. For me with any guitar instructional, on first second and third, maybe 100 viewings its like trying comprehend quantum theory(In all actuality quantum theory is easier to comprehend). There is that one point however, in music theory/guitar instruction there is an epiphany where it become very clear the point by the instructor is making to where you say to yourself, "oh shit, hell. fuck. why was I so confused on this simple bit of music???" Thanks again, dude

  • I guess i'm thinking of the Major blues scale a teacher once showed me that starts with your pinky on the 8th fret low C then on went 5,6,7 on 5th string then 5, 7 on 4th string then 5,7,8 on 3rd 5,8 on 2nd 5,8 on 1st. Maybe thats just am pentatonic ? But he uses it over maj7 chords so you get a bluesy sound on Jazz standards

  • Hi Jens. Thanks for video. The most of the lessons suggests licks and approaches for the root, but nothing about sobdominant and dominant, for turnaround. Jazz blues is different from common blues because player arrange solo per chord, but not per scale. Is it possible to suggest something for this case?
