Robert Glasper Releases “Code Derivation” with Vicente Archer on Bass – No Treble

Robert Glasper: Code Derivation

Pianist Robert Glasper is one of the leading figures bringing hip-hop into a jazz context. Although the musical vocabularies are often mixed in his music, he’s released a new album called Code Derivation that puts them more side by side. The record features two versions of a handful of his original songs: one played live in the studio by his band and another that’s been “flipped” by a producer he chose.

“Jazz is literally in the beginning-bones of hip hop,” Glasper tells Apple Music. “That’s why I even used the word derivation, because it’s a derivative of jazz. I’ve played with the masters of both of these genres so I wanted to do a project where it’s like, ‘Hey, I’m going to do jazz songs that I wrote with my band—with my friends—and I’m going to get dope producers that are my friends to sample me.’”

Glasper’s band for Code Derivation includes Walter Smith III, Mike Moreno, Kendrick Scott, Keyon Harrold, and Marcus Strickland. Bass on the album is handled by Vicente Archer, who is also known for his work with John Scofield, Nicholas Payton, Norah Jones and more. The bassist shines on the album with prominent bass lines on “Madiba” and “AJ’s Vibe.”

Code Derivation is available now exclusively on Apple Music.
