Rig Rundown – John McLaughlin
http://www.premierguitar.com PG’s Jason Shadrick is On Location in Milwaukee, WI, where he catches up with guitarist John McLaughlin. In this Rig Rundown video segment, McLaughlin talks to us about using his Godin Freeway because of its tone and MIDI capabilities which are a big part of McLaughlin’s current touring setup. In addition, McLaughlin talks about his use of effects: Seymour Duncan Twin Tube Classic, MXR Carbon Copy Delay, and a MXR Stereo Chorus. Even a guitar pick can’t be overlooked, during his 2010 tour McLaughlin was using a Dunlop Jazz 3 picks, but he would scrap down the pick to get a better grip and playability.

Really need to understand how he dials in a few sounds coz unless I'm mistaken, there's more to his sound than just those pedals… but man his honesty here is awesome. How do u tell between wireless and a cable, different strung brands, real tubes or processing, etc he don't care

John can make a toy guitar through a Micky mouse amp sound good. A true master …I hear a lot of crying about his tone these days, the doubleneck through twin marshall days were 40 years ago he moved on.

Cool interview. I’m surprised I’m just finding it now. He’s the best, of course, but, to be honest, I haven’t really liked his tone for years. Too much chorus for my taste. Give me any of his sounds from before around ‘75 and I’d be in nirvana. Miles, Mahavishnu, Lifetime and even his early solo records (from the 60’s) are all incredible. Would using an amp make much of a difference? Probably not. As these musicians age they have to go with what feels right for them! I’m just glad that B.B. never changed, god bless him. I would bet most Cream fans were hoping that Clapton was going to be plugging an SG into a big Marshall stack when they did heir reunion, but that didn’t happen. Just not his thing anymore. Dang it.????♂️
This also had me wondering what happened to John’s English accent. I’m sure he had one at one point, right? Now it sounds vaguely New Yorkish, but I’m no expert when it comes to accents. It’s interesting though.
Also, I was surprised see him drinking a Coke. I would have imagined him drinking only the purest mountain spring water, imported from Nepal or wherever. Anyway, enough of my rambling, thanks again for the interview!

He's always so reposed and dignified. What's that accent? He's Irish of course, by way of London, so why does he sound like…German?
