MonoNeon, aka Dywane Thomas Jr., came up learning the bass from his father in Memphis, Tennessee, but for some reason, he decided to flip his dad’s 4-string bass around and play it with the string order inverted—E string closest to the ground and the G on top. That’s how MonoNeon still plays today, coming up through a rich, inspiring gauntlet of family and community traditions. “I guess my whole style came from just being around my grandma at an early age,” says Thomas.
His path has led him to collaborate with dozens of artists, including Nas, Ne-Yo, Mac Miller, and even Prince, and MonoNeon’s solo output is dizzying—trying to count up his solo releases isn’t an easy feat. Premier Guitar’s Chris Kies caught up with the bassist before his show at Nashville’s Exit/In, where he got the scoop on his signature 5-string, Ampeg rig, and simple stomp layout, as well as some choice stories about influences, his brain-melting playing style, and how Prince changed his rig.

That bass is cool af
drink when he says "i dont know"
Saw him on a Louis Cole video, damn what a groove.
He always seems like he's fighting the instrument a little bit.
He got that hat from mawmaw lol, he is def diff. Its cool tho
Ok
Mono is the single reason I started playing bass again after putting it down for years after having my first kid. Great to see this.
Great interview!
Awesome ❤
What a cool dude!
I love when musicians say I don't know, I just do it…..
Anything for attention
Highly talented
shit
Yeah i don't know.
Hell yeah. Mono rules
Good ????
He's really getting more comfortable during interviews and we are benefiting GREATLY!!!
4:50 I'm actually right-handed but I play this left-handed — WTF! There are left-handed guitarist which play right handed (like Mark Knopfler) and it's very interesting to have your main hand on the frets.
Slap upside down! ????♂
I want to hear more of what this man has to say about anything, be it music, art, family, or farts.
im seeing a trend here..
Dwayne is amazing. Still amazes me that he plays upside down like that!
That dude doesn't have sweat glands! Either that or there's a "rainforest type" ecosystem under his outfit 😀
