wow, Ed Friedland, he had this "Bass Whisperer" channel decades ago where he reviewed all sorts of basses. I remember when I played one of those videos through a huge 5.1 speaker system and the deep low growl of the bass tone destroyed everyone in sight!

I guess it depends on the music and style ! There’s room for a bass player to support , and there’s room for chops and creativity and improv ! Depends on what is needed ! Like someone said it’s better to have a variety of technical skills and not need them , than need them and not have them ! I
I see so many players shredding on social media
But I don’t see them fitting into a band / live setting like tapping good luck pulling that off in a live setting with a loud drummer the greatest bass players are the ones you don’t even notice like Tommy Shannon pure groove and pocket

Been listening to Ed's instruction since late nineties when he was with bass player magazine. Great player, great instructor, has a lot of good info for young and more seasoned players.
