I think the artifacting caused by the higher pickups is actually a usable tone. The extra decay added by the magnet interference would be a great semi-dirty tone to layer with. I'm just sayin'…????

Tip no.6 experiment with different type and thickness of pick will helps too..

All you need is a decent guitar properly set up even to factory specs. Learn your volume and tone knob nuances as well as your amp settings. The rest is just polish. It's up to you what you're polishing.

5:26 – if you'd play anything above the 12th, maybe 15th fret, the effect of phasing or wobbly sound would be much much stronger, simply making the sound useless.

I have a crucial question.
Are a guitar, and an amp, enough for playing my favorite songs? Ranging from classic rock and metal? I see a lot of people with like pedalboards and Digital stuff Wich I really cannot afford plus i fail to understand, all I have is amp and guitar.
In my opinion, single coil pickups always sounds too bright. I don't care what setting you have it. That is why the 1st thing I do is replace the single coil with stacked humbuckers. Normally, I don't even buy a guitar with single coils unless it's just a deal I couldn't pass.

You tall about what to do if you have an overly bright guitar, but what if a Guitar is actually lacking in thah brightness and sounds very muddy and dark even with the tone maxed out?
I have that issue with some ESP humbuckers

1 get a good guitar
2 learn how to play
3 get rid of humbuckers
All fantastic tips. The tone knob one is the true gamechanger. I’ll eq the amp with it on 6 and If you do the same with your volume control (thus set up and align your pickups with the volume at that setting as well) you won’t need a drive pedal! ????

I’ve been struggling to appreciate the nuance of guitar tone that seems to be so important and contentious among electric guitar players. I often forget to switch from the neck to the bridge pickup and vice versa for 20-30 minutes and then realize I couldn’t even notice I was neglecting it. Maybe I should stop worrying and be grateful I can be happy with affordable gear, but it’s always concerned me I don’t have a great ear for this stuff. I always wonder if other guitarists really find the differences (for example the pickup height comparisons) to be so significant, especially given that there will almost always be at most a few guitarists in the audience when I’m performing. Anyway thanks for this tutorial Darrell.

Hi, I found your video very interesting. Would you please listen to Bert Weedon's FBI, on Youtube. The last but one verse at 1 minute 19 seconds is played on the high strings, at frets 12; 13 and 14. It consists of the notes E; C and A. When I play that verse on my acoustic guitar, it all sounds very thin and frail. Bert plays an electric guitar with a plectrum. Any ideas how he might be achieving such a rich, powerful quality? I am not sure, but I think the big chord which starts each phrase is an A Minor(?) Would you agree?
