Want To Nail Gilmour’s Tone? Before Effects Pedals & Amps, Understand His **Phrasing**

If you really want to nail the legendary guitar tones of David Gilmour, or any of your six-string heroes, first you need to understand their phrasing

Life too short for long YouTube videos? Please see the ‘Interesting bits and go-to sections’ information below.

Welcome! Dan here. This started as a vlog idea. Sat here in YouTube Gearvideoland, we are constantly bombarded with questions about the equipment our favourite players used to get certain tones. And we find ourselves constantly replying that focussing only on the gear is never going to get you there.
The next old chestnut to come out is that ‘tone is all in the hands’. We LOVE this one – hold those hands up next to your ears. Can you hear that tone? No, of course you can’t because the gear clearly plays a part too. It all matters.
The thing that links a player’s hands with the gear is their approach and technique. And more than anything else, what marks a specific player out is their phrasing. That’s why it’s often said that you can plug David Gilmour into anything… and he’ll sound like David Gilmour. In fact it was probably him who said it in the first place!
We think it’s worth some time. Looking closely at a player’s phrasing will get you closer to their sound than any boutique pedal. Not only that, but it’s absolutely free to take and there’s no three-year wait list!
Let’s do this…

  • The whole wish you were here part 1/2 is a blues in G, so don't tell us that he is not a blues player.

  • This is the first time I’ve encountered this channel and I’m really enjoying it!
What a wonderful tear down of a fantastic guitarist and his sound, but also all of the theory and practical advice…so much in one video!

  • Super interesting episode… and what a subtle tour de force to play the solo with the same phrasing but totally different notes. Mind blowing!

  • Lovely playing Dan. Are you doing those bends on heavy gauge? I'm struggling with 10s for that solo atm – the b string is 13. At least I know now I can go up 2 frets for that second big bend – I was taught to do the whole lot on the 13th fret of b string (0.26 on video)

  • I love your show. I'm a 335 fan or Gibson in general. I'm also English/Australian citizen. So kinda fits. Live in NZ now with eyes open

  • Wow. What a gem of a video this is…
6 minute mark is particularly enlightening.

  • Hey thanks for posting, I couldn’t find this anywhere.
I was blessed to be the director of this gig and I have to say Chris is a lovely and funny guy. He was concerned that I’d shoot his best side, like he has a bad side. I think he was having me on.

  • I know this is an old video but… Damn it! This video was interesting as hell but also inspiring! I mean, I kinda bought a Big Muff pedal just because I wanted to sound like David Gilmour even before I knew how to properly play any Pink Floyd's. It took me a while to realize the Big Muff itself didn't do much because I sucked and now that I suck less it's starting to shine beause I now feel the subtle nuances David Gilmour puts into every phrase he plays. That knowledge exceeds any gear purchase I could make now or in the future

  • Gilmour has always been my favourite guitarist but he never inspired me to play myself it always sounded too good to even imagine I could play like that .I'm having a go now but I just fell in love with a particular guitar [Tele type] so now I'm finally learning how to play at 60 lol .Neve too late eh?
