For those who are worried about damage to the guitar from the tapping (particularly the thumb tap), look up several versions of Tommy Emanuel playing Initiation. He uses all sorts of scratching and thumping on the body of the guitar throughout the piece. I think he also only uses one of his guitars for that piece. If you look at the progression of that guitar over the years starting with early recordings, you will see that the damage to the finish of the guitar gets worse over time. But, he takes advantage of that to get different pecussian/ambient sounds as the patina changes.
