  • When I try out a guitar, I have one question in mind "what will this instrument inspire me to play?" Consequently, I would never go in with a decided set of riffs. I would never play someone else's music. I will play what comes out when I hold that guitar. If it doesn't inspire me to new heights, I have no desire to acquire that particular instrument.

  • The thing that I hate the most while playing in stores is that they have tones that I don't like, no reverb/delay, … not everybody want to play on a clean fender amp lol
That and OLD STRINGS ! Yeah sure, playing sticky strings with a bad tone will help me have a feel for that guitar, I'm not buying an acoustic guitar ! (last time I even went with my vox amplug because I "know" how it sounds, it has delay, reverb, overdrive, high gain… and I don't have to play loud in the store !)

  • It's always SO intimidating going into a guitar store/shop and feeling like everything you play is either annoying, loud, or childishly simple, It's so frustrating. I want to use distortion and other effects but, when I do it sounds stupid rather than being cool and interesting. I don't want to put on a performance I just don't want to sound dumb.

  • LoL most of the time, I usually try to tune the guitar, then I struggle a little with the amp to twerk up some sound.
What to play is must usualy the less I concern.

  • When a simple "What to play" turns into an accidental music degree flex of theory knowledge.

  • The problem is always when you run out of riffs and start playing the same ones over again because you really like the guitar and want to keep playing it but you can’t buy it yet or ever.

  • Hi ! I've been playing guitar ( publicly ) since about 1968 . Ya wanna gofer IMPACT ? If you got the chops of the man playing demo in this video , listen closely to someone else who is also " trying out " a guitar ( don't worry , there will be somebody else ) and DON'T challenge them . Instead , start playing WITH them in a complimentary style ! Do this ' till you draw some attention ! Then DO IT SOME MORE !! When you're satisfied , put the guitar back on the rack , and , wordlessly , depart ! Don't chase THEM ! Make them chase YOU !! It's fun to have fun , but ya gotta know how !!!

  • This is funny cause' what I first thought is what to play on the guitar, NOT what guitar to play. But when I do choose one, I stay in my lane: meaning, I play the ones I can afford and are between 300 to 800 USD – Even when 800 USD is pushing it on my budget.

  • It's really silly isn't it. I'm so comfortable with acoustics, I can riff it up and I've been playing electrics all my life too. But I'm so intimidated when it comes to plugging in an electric in a store. I REALLY want an ibanez and i'd love to play some metal. But I feel so afraid of what people will think of me. It really is so silly.

  • How about if I just play some of the more obscure Kirk Hammett solos? Or better yet, take some of the most respected and loved Metallica solos but play the notes all out of order and in different tempo?
