Fender Mustang Bass PJ Review: The Best Budget Bass for Guitar Players?

Checking out a Fender Limited Edition Mustang Bass PJ Electric Guitar (Surf Pearl) I picked up a couple weeks ago. Finally, my bass search is over. This thing rips and I think you’ll agree. I’m by no means a bass expert so feel free to chime in and educate me on the differences of the pickups and some of the reasons a short-scale bass may be a problem. String tension? Dropped tuning might be an issue? Lemme know! Either way, enjoy.

You can see the Fender Mustang Bass here: https://amzn.to/2wqUgpf

The signal chain was AxeFX2 (USA Lead) with the Horizon Devices Precision Drive pedal. Check out the pedal here: https://amzn.to/2w2lUd0

  • Great basses. But I ditched the switch. Rewired it like a j bass with stacked pots. Left the switch cause I like the pickguard, lol

  • Switched to short scale (got this same bass) and couldn’t be happier.

Sounds and plays great and my shoulders no longer get blown out after an hour or so ❤

  • Been playing long scale basses for over 40 years, recently changed to a short scale for ease of playing (age creaping up) and got one of these. They are fairly well made but need a proper set up and the frets tidying up, swapped the switch for a blend knob, they are more bassier sounding than a long scale bass, they have their own sound. I waiting for a custom one to be made by Maruszczyk but the Fender is a gigable bass.

  • The opening is almost like when they prep the Vic Viper for battle, right before the credit screen in the Gradius games.

  • I gotta speak for Squiers. I used to think they were trash until I bought one. I played a Fender P-Bass for most of my career (bassist), and sold it to buy a Squier Affinity J-Bass. It has been excellent. The quality is great and it sounds good enough for my stage gig needs. I then bought a Squier Jaguar SS (30" short scale) and learned two things 1) I'll never buy long scale again. 2) Squier has come a long way in quality. This instrument has impressive workmanship for its price range. It stays perfectly in tune even after weeks without adjustment. The sound (with the P-bass neck pickup) is really nice (less impressive with the J-Bass neck pickup). If I had not have been able to get the Jag SS (it's no longer produced) I'd consider the new replacement 32" Jaguar or one of the two Mustangs (Squier or Fender, which differ in their pickups).

  • Budget bass? For $700? I think we need to discuss the definition of the word “budget” lol

Edit: never mind, you got it for $400? That’s a steal!

  • I am a bass player by trade and still struggle with full sizes, I at least prefer a medium scale length personally because I have sausage fingies…. love the review man!

  • I just bought a Squier Mustang bass INSTEAD of a Fender because 1) It’s CHEAPER than a made-in-Mexico Fender. 2) It’s nearly, if not equally, AS GOOD as this Mexican-made Fender model (yes, I HAVE played both) 3) Finally, MOST IMPORTANT, The Squier bass doesn’t have that NASTY little in-the-way SWITCH on the lower bout, which is a real PAIN for some people to avoid hitting with their hand while playing! The Mexican Mustang GUITARS have the SAME crummy switch, too! If you’re living on a “Pandemic Budget” right now, you might want to take a 2nd look at The Squier Mustang bass. I just bought one, and it is PERFECT! Plays GREAT with NO PROBLEMS whatsoever & it was VERY reasonably priced!

  • Hopefully short scale basses will overcome the negativity attached to them (beginner instruments, cheap quality, etc.). A good short scale is much more versatile than a 34" neck. The only advantages of a bigger bass is that you tend to get a bit more sustain and they look a lot bigger, which for many people is important.

  • Just found this. Love that you played Sinister Minister! If I was gonna play bass, it'd be like Victor Wooten. I'm in the same boat as you. Guitarist with a bit of a short reach! Can say though that you may want to try a J-bass. I'm looking to buy another and regret selling my old one. I didn't find the stretches so bad, but then again I prefer my Les to my Strat because of scale… so maybe I need a Jaguar? Happy guitar hunting!

  • Thanks for the great vid! Just wondering do you feel the thickness of the neck will be too much for a beginner with small hand to handle? Thank you!

  • Great review. Thanks. I just bought one off Craigslist and couldn't be happier. I've bought a lot of guitars in the past in the 1500+ range that I had no business owning since I totally suck. LOL. For bass, just wanted something that could stay in tune and learn on. This bass just works.
