  • We had SUCH a blast on this video, from filming to post-production!

We've admittedly stopped creating workbooks for 'Hears for the First Time' challenges because so few people were grabbing them, but here are a couple of other things we've got for you!

  • I'm stunned that he didn't instantly recognize the ABBA vocals. They were inescapable at one point. Dancing Queen certainly was.

    Strange.

  • what kind of adult hatchling-neonate has apparently only just 'heard ABBA for the first time' ?
    nah, not having it.

  • holy f moly, that was impressive playing, Ian! Basslines from abba are amazing! Heard "If it wasn't for the nights" some time ago, played by Troy (TJH3113): awesome!

  • You did a great job, but — I'm sorry — ABBA is terrible. It's so saccharine and it's obvious that they were just singing phonetically. There's no hint of understanding in their vocals. Just bleh all around.

  • As far as I'm concerned the bass line on this particular song was NOT played by Rutger Gunnarsson but by an english bassplayer named Mike Watson. Rutger had a much better feel of rhythm, pace and "tightness".

  • As a fellow pro bassist, I think I can honestly say that Rutger Gunnarson and Mike Watson are fabulous players and have really influenced my playing. I'm quite surprised that ABBA bass lines are new to you both. Welcome aboard! ????????

  • IAN!!! SERIOUSLY???? Go to your ROOM right now and listen to every record ABBA made. And don't come out until you're done. Bad, bad boy.

  • I would love to use a set of FLAT wound strings and play it snake like in the beginning and that part of the song. IMHO.

  • I haven't hear the whole video yet but up until the six and a half minute mark he REALLY needs to tune his bass to the recording LOL. I don't know if the bass is out of A440 or if the recording is but either way he's not tuned to them! YET. He may fix it before his final though.

  • If You are a musician and never heard everything from ABBA You are not much of a musician… ;o)

  • You guys should do "Jump Into the Fire" by Harry Nilsson – Herbie Flowers' Bassline is insane.

  • TBH, when "Pro Bassist hears ABBA for the FIRST time" came up in my YT suggestions, I first wanted to immediately click "don't suggest this creator any more" because it sounded so ridiculous. But now I'm happy I watched it, this was so much fun.

  • "Never heard ABBA before". What fucking bullshit… Clickbaity af. As if a professional musician has never heard one of the most famous bands of all time before.

    Reply
  • was the melody that Ian sang at the end from crazy on you? cause thats immediately what my mind wandered to lol

  • Have ya'll thought about getting Thundercat to do one of these videos, I wonder if there was anything he hasn't heard before.

  • Please delete this video because I CAN"T STOP WATCHING IT! I'm a (very++) retired software engineer with absolutely no musical background, but being able to watch these two wonderful talents talk the audience though their beautiful musical world filled me with such joy that I now wish I had been a bass player instead. Please do more of these! And congrats to the production staff as the audio, video, and editing are 10 out of 10.

  • Most music from that era are timless. ABBA set themselves apart. No one today can say that they have an education in music without having a small slice even of this band. But at the end of the day that have given material for content by yourselves without which I doubt you could make your own names. Sounds like a knock, but it's the reality of where we are today.

Video was engaging purley because we come from that era where the music had meaning and soul but also and had to see how you faired. So nice one.

Question as with anything else, will you take it to the next level for us to be in awe of you too??

  • It is getting increasingly hard to believe that these full adults who immerse themselves in music have "never heard" so many hugely popular and globally exposed songs from some of the biggest artists in history …. c'mon now … there was one the other day "Ive never heard the Beatles" please people, I know you want clicks for money but …
