When I was first starting out on the bass, I often got stuck with really basic things. I wasn’t progressing as I wanted to – weeks went by and I was still at square one! Luckily, I took a step back and avoided getting stuck with too many bad habits.
In this new video I’m going to outline the 10 common tone fails that I see new (and even more experienced) bass players make. Fixing these mistakes can make or break your bass playing – you’ve got enough to practice without anything else slowing you down!
As always, see you in the shed…
Scott 🙂

This may be an old video but it's still good counsel!
My problem is I can dial in a good bedroom tone but dialing in the mids so my bass cuts through in recordings is a struggle. Not sure if it's my bass tone or too much bottom in the guitars.
As a complete novice, what I struggle with is a constant "echo"/buzzing from the other strings that I'm not playing – like they get knocked accidentally and need to be muted somehow. I don't feel like I've come across any videos by anyone yet that mention this and how to prevent it.
I like flats purely based on how they feel on my hand. And truss rods are threaded for a reason. To turn. To adjust. If I had a dollar for ever bass with a bananna-assed neck out of adjustment…
For people who use multi-effects with earphones, the key thing is to set up their patches correctly for their type of bass. Otherwise, you may miss the essential frequencies and get a bad tone. Factory presets don't always sound good!
The funk is in the gunk!
Forgive my ignorance- the difference between Gain and Volume please?
Personal tone failure: Learning to not have the EQ of the Bass/Amp/FX pedal fight each other.
Why is it that beginners don’t make these mistakes?
I have a question, and I am sorry its been asked before, but why the white glove?
My god! You are so super friendly and casual. You are a gift to all potential bass players. Thank You!!
I had to learn the bass with nails. I couldn't cut them when I picked up the bass, because I was already a professional acoustic guitarist / vocalist and I use them for the guitar. Yes, I had to compensate for it by the angle of my right hand (using the side of the nail), keeping them as short as I could while still being able to play finger style guitar, and filing them to have a smooth catch free edge (which I have to do for the guitar, too) and being mindful of tone. I also can't play directly on top of the pickups, or else I risk hitting them and clicking with the nails. As such, I probably have an attack more like a bassist who plays with a pick. But it's working! (Hey, if it was good enough for Paul McCartney and Chris Squire to use flat picks, I guess I''m good to go with my nails). I love being a bassist in bands more than anything else I do now. But I'm not about to give up my ability to gig as a soloist.
Cheers Scott, this has helped me a lot!! ✌️☺️
Jamerson Never changed his strings…NEVER.
I recently got a gk mb 500 bass head and the eq is very different from what I’ve seen.. all the eq works with one another it’s very hard to describe.. there’s also a contour that pulls or adds low and high.. like i said very different from what i call a normal eq
I'd say one hint missing is: if your bass sounds like a lot of fret noise and other bright disturbing things, don't turn back the high dial in the EQ… check your fingers first. You'll never get better on the fretboard if you can't hear the mistakes because you've EQed them away.
The first point is my sign as a bass player. I've always struggled with biting my nails, so they're always short. As a guitar player, playing fingerstyle is not only painful, but it sounds dull and dead. But the bass said, "C'mon kid, you were made for this."
I am in a band of 6 years
We just introduced a keyboard player i am finding it hard to hear my bass
practice is fine
gigging I don't hear the bass she's right on top of me
I've turned up it sounds like my sound is stuck in the speaker
Stressful the tone sounds fab without the keyboards loud she's right next to the singers voice her husband never had a problem before
Sound is so important and sometimes you sound better if you turn volumes down I have to convince her that ain't going anywhere at the moment
MUTING – one hand or the other. Overtones kill clean notes/tones
What's the big deal from these small details. It's not really that critical. I mean there are some standard tones out there. Fender, Rickenbacker, Music Man… what else?… All these subtilties you mention and when you listen to a record you can't always tell these nuances. So what's the big deal?
