  • Phil's discussion of G&L's size makes me want to support them even more. They are literally the little guy. And it looks like they make a great product.

  • 80's strats will never be vintage no matter how old they get. They'll always just be old.
50's, 60's and 70's strats meet the definition. 80's strats are just another guitar, nothing special or noteworthy at all about them.
Age alone does not make something "vintage". It has to hold some type of cultural significance to the era it comes from.
That's what differentiates vintage from old junk.

  • I’m almost middle aged but I’ve had one of my guitars since I was a young man and it’s accumulated all the dents, scuffs, etc from all the good times I had playing, even just playing alone in my house. I feel like it’s become a reflection of the way my life turned out and I’m immensely satisfied that I’ve made personal history on that guitar and am still continuing to make personal history on it. People who buy vintage guitars I think are chasing this feeling after missing out on it themselves.

  • Cheap makeup brushes work fantastically well for getting dust off guitars.

  • I heard of a guy who wasn’t a master luthier but he had other talents. He got arrested for showing up at the local fishing hole and offering his services as a Master Baiter.

  • I see things as vintage if it is 25+ years 'and' has a cultural importance to their community. I don't see 80's Fender Strats as vintage, Fender strats became important to guitarists in the 60-70s, but an 80's Ibanez, and 80s Fender offsets, I would call vintage since they became the guitar of choice in the early 90s music scene.

I wouldn't consider an 80's Honda Civic, vintage, but an 80s Fox body Mustang is a vintage car.

  • Love to hear the no BS about vintage guitars. They're cool for the history but sound wise, come on. Obviously they're no better or even near what can be built today at a fraction of the cost.

  • As an experienced luthier/repair man/seller – do you think it's worth paying for nitro over poly (sound wise)? I think I know the answer, however would be interested in your opinion 😉

But as far as vintage gear I am in the same camp as you ;D

  • Love your vids. I think your work is amazing. Congratulations on the 400k subs. I'd also like to thank G&L. I have a tribute fallout, I love it and I think it's easily as good as my mim telecaster.

  • There was a podcast he did where he talked about how much Sweetwater sales agents make and how he asked 300 agents how much they make. I can’t find. Can someone please tell me the name of that podcast or tag me in it?

  • Tipping in my mind is kind of b.s. for waiters or waitress'es. If your not making enough money walking back and forth with someones coffee…then youve not chosen the right profession..anyjob that takes no additional schooling, or talent is not going to pay shit.ask yourself, why does the bartender or the chef, or even the manager make more than you??more than likely they had severalhours or years of training in a profession.AND PERFECTED A SKILL..????❤

  • If you want a "Strat with Filtertrons" on a budget, GFS has an Xaviere with their GFS Trons in them. I can tell you from experience that the GFS Trons act more like mini humbuckers than real Filtertrons (my favorite pickups), so it will be like a budget version of this.

For those who want to drop a Filtertron in a Strat, the headache here is that the screws (for the pole pieces) may not line up with the string spacing, especially if it is a US spaced bridge. I do have a real Filtertron in my Samick Malibu in the bridge where it works perfectly but they really want an Import spaced bridge to line the strings up.

If you want to drop in Filtertron type of pickups in a Strat, you might want to try the "Filtertrons in a humbucker shell" type of pickups like Seymour Duncan Psyclones, GFS Nashville Trons GFS Dream 180s, etc… where the pickup will line up more with a US Strat bridge. There is less of an issue if you put a Filtertron in the neck because the strings are physically closer together at that point of the scale length.

For sound, Filtertron in the bridge is the AC/DC Malcolm Young sizzle. Filtertron in the neck has a great Jazz tone but really no sizzle. Keep in mind that Filtertrons are LOUD pickups and a regular output pickup may not match well with the Filtertron. I use Seymour Duncan Quarter Pounder pickups to balance out the sound with a Filtertron because it is THAT LOUD!

So if you have regular single coils or humbucker pickups in a guitar that you want to pair a Tron up with, the "Looks like a Filtertron but really not a Filtertron" pickups might pair up better as they behave more like a mini humbucker that a real Filtertron (GFS Trons, Artecs, DiMarzio, etc…).????????✨

  • If you need to get the bank involved in a $4 coffee purchase, then you're going to have to deal with the bank's point-of-sale software. You can't possibly believe Claire, the barista, had any say in that process.

  • ?? While I’m always looking for an affordable guitar , there are guitars that are old, original and vintage . I think of those 30 year old guitars as collectible and antique. And it’s nice to have one expensive guitar in a collection . But I really use my guitars that I can scratch or dent without feeling really bad! There’s a place for those antique guitars , in museums! ❤ Just never be that $1.00 guy Phil! Phil what is your favorite Jazz guitar ??

  • Those brand adds way lot of value to their vintage guitars. For relatively smaller brands like G&L, you can get vintage guitars at lower prices than second-hand guitars built in 2020. My 1982 G&L s500 only cost me 1000 bucks when I bought it recently.

  • Pretty much all guitars that are light, have a good neck, and stay reasonably in tune are good guitars. Decent hardware and a couple good pickups and you have a great guitar. All that and a great look, YOU enjoy, and you have a special guitar.

  • Anyone paying over $30k for a guitar that wasnt played by someone famous is an idiot. The shit isnt worth as much as you want it to be and its not as rare as you think.

  • Love you Phil. Are you trying to convince yourself you're as good of a guy that we all know you are or is it actually me through watching you? Paging Dr. Freud. I'm high. Who certifies anyone as a luthier other than paying customers? Who designates the Masters? Perhaps writers wanting to get noticed by high praise? The entire world is an honorary society giving badges and medals to each other but really themselves, things that make them believe they're OK you're OK.

  • 20:40 I worked for a few yrs at Ford Australia in Broadmeadows, and was kept on well past the closure. Demolition of Plant 1 was happening arpund us while we worked in Plant 2. One of the original presses couldn't be taken out or dismantled it was fixed into the bedrock of the Country literally. They will never make cars like that again.
