Capturing Alexi Laiho’s Guitar Tone – Marshall DSL20H & Torpedo Captor X

Always loved Alexi’s playing and riffs, really difficult fingering and complex to play. I’ve been a fan for many years and he’s death is a tragedy. I really am sorry to hear and my best regards to his closest and loved ones.

The recordings were captured using Two Notes Torpedo Captor X, a really cool piece of gear that allows you to record and enjoy your tube amplifier without bothering anyone. It simulates a mic’d cabinet with power soak attenuation so there’s no need to run a cabinet while playing.

Anyone with the torpedo you can download my 6 fav presets here

My favourite being the Marshall V30 close mic cab

  • I think you might understand. You were saying snare and kick. Trying the get more high end in The low if thats makes sense.tjhat dynamic growl that's huge w lamb of god. Like a metallic resonance. I wish I could explain it better

Your videos are awesome. Ears dont lie. I like the honesty. If you get the result thats what matters. Not brand name and i sooooo appreciate that

  • He used always bass almost on full. Lol. He used chorus effect to push midds out more. You can look it up now.

  • You really nailed the tone. I would add a bit more bass like the one you can hear in the song Follow The Reaper.

  • You’re missing the EMG MM-04 preamp booster installed in the guitar. Alexi had his amp’s gain way down and used the booster in his guitar to get an aggressive sound.

  • Could you let me know the order of the pedals you have set up there please. As im in the process of replicating it and id like to know the exact order of the pedals 🙂 thank you

  • Awesome job nailing his tone and great playing. Only one other thing Alexi said in a video interview with his rig rundown. He showed the boss super chorus and said its always on.

  • Hi mate thanks so much for this video, really helped me to craft a better sound for playing COB songs. But I’m still new to some of this tech…how do you hook the Captor X into your PC please to record please? I can’t crank my amp as much as I’d like because of the neighbours

  • Excellent job once again bro! Your demo's really have shown me how much you can manipulate an amp to get so many different killer tones. I wish I had this knowledge back in the 90's when I was in bands! I've been trying to decide on my next amp and I'm leaning towards that Marshall. My only concern is if it would keep up with a band?
    Great playing too! Thank you.

  • Really well done, watching your other tone chasing series and enjoying myself. Love your bird.

  • Yeah, but can you replicate the awesome tone that the Nick Jonas used back in 2016?

    Top that one mate.

  • Feedback – the good kind… like when you're holding a note and then somehow you get those overtones (?) that blend in and make in sing and sustain (sorry, I don't really know what's happening technically). I thought this occurs when the sound from an actual speaker then hits the pickups and multiple sounds are then "feeding back" in a loop.
So, can we actually get this when using Captor X with cab sims and listening only via Headphones?? thx

I bought the captor x so I could (ever) play my silver jubilee. It's great, it's fun, but I feel like I'm missing something of the raw-ness that comes from using with a cab.

  • I'd love hear you try and capture Michael Amotts tone of Arch Enemy, has you've nailed the bodom tone perfectly. Specifically his and Bill Steer in The Carcass Heartwork album.
